This property is beautiful and immaculately maintained. The pool table and game room kept my 13, 15, & 9-yr-old busy while we were cooking. The layout is perfect for families. The weather curtains/walls and roof overhang effectively keep the rain out. The birds land right off the patio, in the surrounding garden, and are stunning. I thought the birds or howler monkeys would wake us in the morning, but they didn’t. Except for a truck or two early, it’s quiet in the main bedroom. (Nothing a pair of ear plugs won’t fix, if you’re a light sleeper like me.) The mattresses in the main bedroom are firm, and in the separate bungalow, more firm. I like a softer mattress these days (over 50), but surprisingly, I did fine. My husband struggled a bit, but he has a bad back. The door to the main bedroom latches & seals enough to keep insects out and the excellent AC in.
There’s no one who could've guided us better through the process of visiting an international clinic, where we received excellent care, than Judah, our host. The clinic in La Fortuna is a 25-minute drive from Villa Hermosa. Judah suggested a specific doctor and he was exactly as Judah described. GoogleTranslate was helpful in the clinic. We all theorized my younger daughter ingested some bad bacterium from the ocean during our previous beach days, (3 hours west), or contracted some weird virus from the plane. But, it was not Covid; (we all tested). None of the rest of us became ill, and typically, we share! Pack your super pro-biotics, just in case! Judah was so caring; he continually checked in to see how our daughter was doing, even after we returned to Minnesota. His help meant the world.
Before she fell ill, Judah set up our visit to the Hanging Bridges Park, which I highly recommend, and two more days of excursions—The Springs Spa day pass—another recommendation, and the Zip-lining Park, which we had to miss. Judah kept in mind our preference for low scheduling. He’s the most accommodating host/concierge we’ve ever encountered, as in, whatever your needs are, he’s there to help, but not intrusively. And he did all of it, free of charge, which, as you know, saves countless hours of research, planning, and scheduling. (This wasn’t our first vacation home rental.) Judah sets the bar so high, recommending the best eats, too; there’s nowhere to go but down (you’ll be spoiled!) His property manager and gardener, Misael, is excellent, as well.
We felt safe once we arrived in Costa Rica, in terms of Covid exposure. Unlike some of our fellow traveling Americans, Costa Ricans wore masks inside and outside, always-- whenever they might be anywhere near others, which helps explain why their cases are much lower. They also take temps and have hand-washing stations outside grocery store doors. (The locals don't have the luxury of non-compliance or filling their limited number of hospitals.)
We’d stay at Villa Hermosa again. The property is roughly 25 minutes (of scenic beauty) from everything, except The Springs Spa, which is only 10 minutes away, and the nearest small convenience/grocery store, which is 5 minutes away. The nearby (10 minute), yummy pizza place was closed, due to Covid. Hopefully, everything will be up and running again by the time you visit. Most restaurants in La Fortuna were open. Rent a FWD (or have Judah set that up, too; he works with two of the best companies; car rental is different in Costa Rica). Googlemaps should have his property pinned; take the paved route to and from town, if not going to The Springs. I cannot say enough about the extraordinary landscape of the rainforest mixed with countryside, and the breathtaking beauty of the Arenal volcano & lake, which you see one/all of these every time you drive to and from this property.
Finally, it takes a little longer to drive to Villa Hermosa the first time; do it doing daylight and drive further/longer than you think you need. The landmark signs, across the street from the gated garage entrance, are tinier than you'd expect and are posted on an electricity pole (?)--not a stand-alone sign: easy to miss. But, it's true, if you drive 3 more minutes past the property, you'll come to the end of the dirt road, which was scheduled for paving before Covid hit, and see the convenience store on the right corner. There, it's easier to turn around. I'm writing this now because there's no cell service or wifi OFF the Villa Hermosa property, until you get closer to town (La Fortuna). But wifi definitely works well ON the property.
