My wife and son and I spent six days here and found it to be a fantastic immersion in the nature, culture, and cuisine of Costa Rica. Daniel was an extremely knowledgeable guide, and we had a wonderful birding tour with him. He is really passionate about the environment and is working to restore the the native forest to parts of his property where it was cut down long ago. There is still a primary forest that he took us through where we saw numerous new bird species and some of the poison dart frogs. He also showed us the dreaded bullet ant and lots of native plants with medicinal uses. We learned a LOT from him, for which we will be truly grateful. He also arranged a tubing trip for us, which was a real blast!
Abuela Esmeralda lives next door, and she greeted us with hugs on our arrival. She is very sweet lady who brought us fresh treats and even spent an afternoon teaching us how to make tamales in the Costa Rican fashion, tied up in banana leaves. It was a fun experience and an immersion Spanish lesson. She had a pack of nine tiny Chihuahuas, a couple of which dropped by for friendly visits. We're actually cat people but found them adorable!
On the days it rained, we were perfectly happy to sit on the porch and watch the constantly changing clouds and the parade of local birds too numerous to mention here, including the Crested Guans, locally called Pavitas, after whom the cottages are named.
In short, staying here was the experience of a lifetime. DO take a nature tour with Daniel; he was able to spot things we totally would have missed, including a mother and baby sloth that he saw in the trees beside the road as we were driving by.
