As part of our Transylvania fairytale horseback riding expedition, we spent two nights at what is now King Charles’ country retreat. We rode from the mountain down through a wooded trail to arrive at a pasture and welcoming barn manager, waiting to receive our horses. Once untacked they flew to the grassy field and rolled in delight. Through the barn to a central courtyard we were surrounded by quaint, but refurbished dwellings. Meticulous care had been made to repeat the local fabrics and decor in the charmingly appointed rooms. One room called the “dwarf room” required stooping low to get into the bathroom… a quirky solution to an ancient building. The facilities, however, were updated with good showers, toilets and hot water. The bedding was particularly comfortable with fluffy down pillows and comforters.
I can understand why a busy king would seek refuge in this pastoral setting with fruiting trees, bubbling streams, bright bird call, and smiling villagers.
Meals were served out of doors in a covered alcove with its own fireplace. Cuisine is completely local as it prepared by some village women themselves. We enjoyed delicious bread with every meal as well as cheese and meats produce locally. One does not go to Romania for elegant cuisine, but one can find traditional food at this accommodation. .

Tips för att välja rum: There is only a tiny grocery shop in the village and no restaurants so full board is the only way...

We so enjoyed our stay at Zalanpatak. We stayed a full week and apart from two nights when a riding party came through, we were the only guests. The journey was definitely worth it.
The peacefulness of the valley is very special and it is almost like stepping back in time. We were a little before the main summer wild flower season but there were plenty of spring flowers especially on the high meadows, carpets of cowslips and orchids. The little guesthouses scattered in the grounds have been beautifully restored and are charming and we were lucky enough to have the Kings room which is spacious and comfortable. The food was excellent, everything home made and served by the friendly Hungarian speaking staff from the village. My husband enjoyed the guided walks with Czarba very much. The scenery is beautiful. I particularly enjoyed the cart rides with Karchi (please excuse any spelling error with the Hungarian names) especially as we made it up onto the high plateau, I am a non-walker. And I enjoyed reading in a long chair in the utter peace and tranquility. We explored local craftsmen in nearby villages and enjoyed a slow walk through the village with Szidi, visiting the little shop and the museum in someone’s house.
I was amazed how thoroughly our room was being scrubbed out after our visit, including hosing down the rugs and drying them in the sun. We did pull up our own bedcovers every morning (shock-horror) but I think it’s important to remember that this holiday is about stepping back into a simpler lifestyle. I smiled to think that maybe the King also pulls up his duvet. The staff were so helpful, friendly and always full of smiles, especially at our attempts to speak a few words of Hungarian. We were sorry to leave them and sorry to leave such a special place. For us both it was holiday we had looked forward to for several years and we were not disappointed. Our combined ages are 160 but this did not prevent us taking part in the various activities.

Het guesthouse ligt in the middle of nowhere.

We stayed for three nights in October 2023 arriving buoyed up in anticipation but leaving with mixed feelings and some disappointment.
The location and layout are charming: simple, quiet, rural and pleasant. There was no sign on the closed gates to identify the place or welcome the guests; no bell to alert staff; no directions on where to find reception once through the small door. Eventually a lady did appear, and we lugged our own luggage to our room.
The two rooms we had were in poor shape, and although charming they are in dire need of refreshment: towel rail with paint peeling off, grubby tiling in the bathroom, loose toilet seat, threadbare upholstery and suchlike (see photos). There were just two teabags that were never replaced, and the room was not serviced at all for three days – at these prices quite unacceptable. They could do with a folding luggage rack to save scrabbling through ones bag on the floor as there was no space to unpack; and nowhere near the bed to charge your phone – indeed only one bedside table, so a chair was commandeered.
The staff are drawn from the local village and are pleasant and generally helpful. But the lady in charge, who controls the finances etc. is far from gracious, and on two occasions asked guests to leave their breakfast to pay their invoices at her convenience rather than theirs.
Breakfast was extensive and delicious, served in the outside bothy in good weather, but dinner was a very simple affair of plain home cooking: nothing special in flavour or ingredients.
Activities are advertised on the website but never offered or mentioned during our stay, and perhaps are now non-existent? There are lovely walks both on the level through the village and more strenuous – and beautiful – in the hills above the guesthouse .
Some final observations: this hostelry is expensive and poor value compared to what is on offer elsewhere, and although it has charm it lacks style and efficiency to compensate;and it smacks of having no effective or caring local supervision. Perhaps most concerning is that this place trades on the name and the ownership of King Charles III and therefore, in his absence, his local agent- presumably Count Kalnoky - bears a special responsibility to ensure that all is well-run and good value, as The King would wish. And at present it is not.

If you are looking for a step back in time for a unique stay, you will love this guesthouse.
The staff are all wonderful and made the stay such a pleasure.
The whole experience is authentic and so peaceful.
The food was plentiful and delicious, with even a wine list.
It’s definitely off the beaten track but that is what is so fantastic. Will definitely be recommending this to all my friends.
