My musical and life long friends met my wife and I at the Post & Pelican this past weekend for an annual get together. What a perfect place for a small group to reconnect, relax and revitalize our friendship and play some music together in the great room in front of the fire. Our hosts Jane and Craig created a perfect setting on the shore of Lake Winnipeg with the sound of the surf and the cry of the gulls to listen to as you gaze out across this inland sea. Our rooms were spacious, comfortable and quiet with private bathroom and a small bar fridge just outside the door for....whatever! Our breakfast was high end restaurant presentation and quality with good old rural quantity, no one leaves hungry! We will be back.
Having stayed in BnBs for over 30 years, whenever we are given a recommendation from a BnB host that includes, "You, really, must stay with", we have learned to listen! It happened, again, as we were making our BnB booking arrangements for a two week exploration of the south-eastern portion of Manitoba. When we told a BnB host that we were wanting to travel up the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, through Gimli and on to the Icelandic settlement at Hecla, she immediately said, "Oh, my. Wonderful! And you MUST stay with Jane Mackie at Post and Pelican BnB!" And so must you, if you find yourself anywhere near!! Post and Pelican host, Jane Mackie, is the perfect BnB owner. The BnB, itself, could not offer the guests more. As one drives into the property, it is like leaving one world (that of farms as far as one can see) and into wonderfully warm and welcoming sea shore home. The home is a spacious, one floor plan that is focussed on the vista of Lake Winnipeg which is just beyond a whimsical back garden and down the steps to the broad beach. We were transformed by the views. We enjoyed the large, and comfortable, sitting room which combines with the breakfast area and its near floor to ceiling windows warmed by the morning sun as it rises over the lake. Were it not for the pull of the beach, the long walks, and the mesmerizing sight of White Pelicans who migrate to the lake for the summer, it would be very easy to sit and enjoy the show, from the windows, all morning. Jane's hospitality is second to none, as are the breakfasts which she offered us each morning. Everything was local, or from her garden and preserve cupboard. Waking up to the anticipation of what awaited us at Jane's table was unlike any other stay! Added to this is the visits which we had with Jane, each morning. Jane is a font of information. She, quite literally, lived on the Lake every summer while growing up in Winnipeg. Her parents had a family sized sailboat on which the entire family lived all summer, year after year (ask about the experience!). It was Jane who began our fascination with "Wish Stones", each from the shore and each with a perfectly round hole through the stone! Jane explained that finding one was to get a wish, but if the hole was not totally through, it was someone else's wish and had to be put back on the beach to wait for them. Along with husband Craig, we enjoyed long evening visits by the fire in the great room. We felt as though we were family. And, in a way as guests in their home, we were. Both Craig and Jane have a wealth of amazing stories about their area of Manitoba, and the shoes of Lake Winnipeg. Bonus! Only 15 minutes up the Lake from Gimli, and on a quiet beach which overlooks the fresh water sea that is Lake Winnipeg, Post and Pelican is a world apart from everything in the region. Jane and Craig's hospitality is a world apart from almost all BnBs one normally encounters. Bring your wine, put it in the mini fridge, make yourself a tea, or coffee anytime you wish from the coffee maker and Kettle near the great room and, don't forget to have a one of Jane's fresh made sweets while you're at it. If there is one thing which we could wish were different, it would be that Post and Pelican BnB were closer to Niagara so we could go back often and visit with Jane and Craig.…
