Hello there, Hawaii Firefighter! It seems that you understand and appreciate the RP concept well. Of course, the "river hot springs" are what fueled us to develop the project, in this relatively secluded and very difficult location. Here, there is no access to a municipal water pipeline...when we began the project, we did not have electricity...there was no phone reception...and the roads were substantially more rugged than they are now, if you can believe that! Regarding our team here at Rio Perdido: we don't work to simply meet a set of standards or goals. It is an absolute requisite that all team members enjoy spending time here, interacting with their colleagues, and, above all, that they feel the natural desire to make our guest's time here positively memorable. As for the bugs, thanks for that note on tolerance. Indeed, we are in a rare "dry tropical forest", though during this time of the year, it does feel like a jungle. There is fauna everywhere. And, we do not spray with traditional insecticides, so you may catch an ant or two in your room. At some point, a cicada or a grass hopper could land on your shirt. You will see many mammals and you will see different types of reptiles. This is very much a part of the Rio Perdido experience. Have a beautiful day! Gabriel

Hello there! I’m guessing that it’s Adriane and Pamela…yes? Thanks for that amazing review. First off: sorry about that bumpy entrance road! We tell folks to keep it at 20kmh or less, and simply be patient, as it’s only a couple of miles of rocky road…once you succeed, you shall be rewarded! As for our welcome cocktails, they vary quite a bit and they usually depend on the seasonality of the fruits, veggies, seeds and herbs that we may use. Of course, vodka is always plentiful at RP! MONKEYS… it's actually very rare NOT to see monkeys at RP. That being said, July is usually less attractive to our simian friends because not to many of the native trees are bearing fruits or flowers. Personally, I love July at RP… actually, every month is completely unique here. Adriane and Pamela (sorry to blow your cover): when you are ready to come back with you families, we will pamper you guys even more…it is our promise. Just let us know with a bit of advance notice. Warm regards from Guanacaste! Gabriel

Hello 82711 (that's a first...)! We thank you for posting your review; it will be helpful for anyone reading whom is considering a visit. Indeed, the last couple of miles of road (the only unpaved section) has gotten bumpy and we are still working on getting that fixed. That being said, with a bit of patience, the rocky trail get you to a good little spot! Regarding the food: yes, guests should keep everything sealed as (for your health and that of the native fauna) we do not spray insecticides or inorganic repellents. you may find ants and other critters around. It's true, unspoiled nature. That being said, we work with certain plant life, bats, and special architectural considerations to keep bungalows and other spaces as free of creatures as possible. As for the tour rates, we thank you for noticing. We really try to offer a high quality product and, in general, high value with every service that we provide. These $40 tours could be priced higher, as many agencies and other RP fans have recommended...and indeed, the rates are a bit higher for day-visitors. Nevertheless, we will try to maintain the low rates for as long as possible. Finally, regarding the biking: yes, this is the only activity that is not appropriate for beginners. We hope to have a more elementary trail in the near future and we encourage future visitors to check with us for our progress with this. Have a great day. Gabriel

Hello Luis, thanks for writing and posting your review! While we would probably cringe at having dark pavement poured over the public access road, from San Bernardo to Rio Perdido, we are aware that the road is rough... definitely not in an ideal state. As I have informed our guests for years, we have poured money into this public road for years, as the local government has never had the budget to maintain it. But here, when it stops raining, the winds pick up. So a smooth road will be washed or blown away in WEEKS. It's frustrating. We do hope that 2017 will be the year that the government lends us a hand and helps to make said approach smoother for our future visitors. Luis, please inform us prior to a future visit. You can ask for me, or Mario, or Laura...we always do something extra-special for returning visitors. Warm regards, Gabriel

Do you have a spa menu with prices We DO LOVE our massages!
Hello twinklebelle! We love massages too--! If you may take a moment to write us to our concierge, info, or reservations emails, we will be very glad to send you the spa menu as a pdf. TripAdvisor frowns upon sharing specific email addresses through their platform, but it's all very intuitive (the word above - at - domain, etc). FYI: Most of our massages (if not all of them) range between $50 and $100, depending on the specific treatment and its duration. The rates are comparably lower than those of spas at coastal hotels in our "category". We believe in value... and in the right to massages... as frequently as possible! Our in-house therapists are very good... we trust that you shall be pleased. Regards!

How many days / nights do you need at Rio Perdido. Do you stay on the property most of the day. Would 3 full days there cut it?
Hello TUMUSA! This question is commonly asked. Indeed, you'll want no fewer than 3 evenings to get a gist of the property -- experience some of the natural attractions and some of the activities. Keep in mind that our two longest stays have exceeded 3 happy weeks here and it is common for guests to spend a week+. Simply: there are many things to see and do that don't appear on our website or on social networks. And, for those staying a bit longer, there are other beautiful and unexploited sights in the nearby area. TUMUSA: we actually used to prohibit 1-evening stays, in response to the recommendations of experienced industry professionals. We found that short-stay guests were rarely able to absorb the RP vibe... they generally "didn't get it" and that went against our promise as an "experience generating" destination. I hope that this is helpful! Cheers--

Hi There- my husband and i are thinking of coming to you for two nights after our stay at Hemosa and i was wondering if there are any other services to get to you from there other than renting a car- which we want to avoid. Also how long does the journey take and do you have any idea on cost from there?
Hi Helen, "Hermosa" is one of the more common names in CR; there are at least 3 beaches called Hermosa. One of these is in Guanacaste, one is not far from Santa Teresa (Cobano), and one is just south of Jaco (Central Pacific). From the northernmost Hermosa (the one in Guanacaste), it is a 2hr drive and it is not difficult. We work with a couple of very reliable transfer companies and we'd be happy to connect you with them. Please write us at our reservations, concierge, or info emails (all of them are at rioperdido ... TripAdvisor blocks the publication of email addresses). Of course there are many options out there, but please know that things vary... drivers, vehicle types, timeliness, etc. Please let me know if you need more info and I will try to answer asap, as I will be connected all afternoon. Regards!

I read on these comments that for guests staying at the hotel the price per activity is $40 however when I contacted the hotel via your website and got a list of activities offered it says they are $60. I asked if there were better prices for guests and they responded that I needed to talk to receptions when I got where which isn’t very helpful when I want to know in advance. Please clarify.
Hello there. Our TripAdvisor settings have always requested notifications, yet we only get notified about 50% of the time, so we check... but occasionally questions slip by. Sorry about that! This is why we ask that TA users get in touch with our concierge colleagues via email (TA does not allow us to post email addresses nor URLs). So, $60 is the minimum that any day guests would pay for adventures at Rio Perdido. Hotel guests will generally have access to special rates and / or specials. So, guests will generally pay about $40 per adult, per guided activity. Actually, the private guided hikes and bike tours are about $25/per hour, for groups of up to 6. We believe in offering our esteemed visitors a high quality experience at a fair cost; we believe in the concept of value. And actually, we urge guests to speak to our managers if ever they feel that a service at RP has not met their expectations or its cost is not amply justified. Again, I am sorry for the late response. Please let me know if there is anything else that I could try to shed light upon... and please, always feel free to contact us directly via email, phone, chat, etc. REGARDS!

Is it safe to drink the water and have ice cubes in drinks? Does Rio Perdido have a water filtration system? I only ask because I had two very horrible sicknesses in Mexico (same trip) and want to avoid potential issues with my stay at Rio next year. Thank you!
Dear Aradia, I've lived in Costa Rica for almost 2 decades and I've never gotten sick from drinking the water, yet, on my first trip to Mexico, many years ago, I fell quite ill within 3 days of arriving. I've had 1 or 2 similar experiences in other Latin American countries. CR does a great job of keeping its water clean. That being said, at Rio Perdido we source our own water from mineral wells. These are frequently tested by respected labs. The wells provide us with water that is consistently as close to perfect as you can get; better than most anything that you will drink in much of the US and Europe. At the kitchen and at our bars, we pass this already clean water through a filtration system, simply to further avoid any possibility of contamination. We'll be happy to speak to you & provide you with more info, at any time. Remember that our concierge is happy to assist future guests, even many months prior to arrival. Warm regards!
