This is a lovely little museum in a very pretty coastal village, full of important artefacts and information about Staithes and its (very) famous former inhabitant, Captain James Cook. You should definitely visit if you are in Staithes.

A tribute to one man’s passion for Staithes but so much more. Plenty of artefacts relating to Captain Cook but also some great examples of scale model boats and amazing early clocks. Easy way to spend an hour and a case of well I never when reading about those who lost their lives off Porthcawl (close to my home town) in the great storm

Popped in for a look around during a visit to Staithes. Found the signage amusing and if taken literally could leave you dizzy and confused. However it is good to see the local volunteers making the effort to keep this museum going

Interesting little museum focussing on local history and that of the seafarers from the area. Definately worth 20 mins of time for a quick look round. Dog friendly

Our first attempt to visit the museum was thwarted by them closing early - 25 mins prior to the advertised closing time on bank holiday Saturday. However we wanted to explore more of Staithes as we'd run out of parking time and couldn't face the hill twice in one day so returned the following.

We found the museum itself fascinating - lots of treasure about Cook's explorations and some of his personal collections. In a way, they could do with lots more space as we learned that there was much more in storage. The advertised 'artisan art and crafts' sadly lacking - especially all four of our being makers. If you are looking for mid-high end this is not the place and given there is only one gallery and a couple of nic-nac tourists shops in Staithes, The main 'out through the gift shop' didn't offer anything beyond something you can purchase elsewhere - the expensive prints aside. They are missing a trick, especially when trying to raise funds to purchase the contents to ensure the legacy survives. It would also provide an additional draw to the museum.

The idea of not charging an entrance fee but relying on donations is a great one - between us, we ended up donating quite a bit as each of our party of four didn't 'communicate' so the museum was definitely up that day! Its all for a great cause though and this is a great little concern to support. It not only provides tourists with a little bit of local history, but also gives the locals something to be proud of too. We were also lucky to meet the owner of the building so we got lots more of its history from him.

I was just Googling to check if this museum was still in Staithes ,we last visited about 20 years ago ,it was privately owned and run by the owner and his wife .
We had a long conversation with him .WE purchased some prints from Captain Cooks 3rd voyage ,and the owner printed out some information from a book about the prints ,for us .He was really enthusiastic about his collection and told us that his attempts to get official recognisation as a museum had all failed .I felt that he had put his life and soul into that place ,I am so pleased that it has been carried on by volunteers ,as i expect that if that lovely person is still alive ,that he would be too old to run the place now.wish we could see it again .

Fascinating museum with significant collections of Captain Cook prints, artifacts, local history including Staithes School of artists of late 19th and early 20th century. Kept open by volunteers who are raising fund to buy the museum to keep it open. Free but deserving of financial contribution. Very interesting to anyone with variety of exhibits.

what a lovely interesting and informative hidden gem of a place this is, helpful friendly volunteer staff, (all local and informative) spent three hours in here, and still didnt absorb everything, so got to go back (cant wait) now free entry, although if you do visit, please try to leave a donation to keep this place going for our future generations, abd our lost fishing heritage, so at least the history can be taught to future generations, for the train obsessed amongst you, if you choose to park at the top of hill in pay and dispay, as you come out of car park near giant lobster, look to your left and you will see old staithes station, at the back of it where little industrial estate is, you will see whats left of goods yard, them as you turn right at lobster to go down hill, if you look into hillside on left, you will see whats left of the viaduct ! hope this helps( this was on the whitby loftus line)
