I have never seen such big waves in person. There is a warning that if you're not a strong swimmer to stay out. Beautiful to look at, did not go in.

The coastline along Makena State Park is fabulous for its pristine nature with no resorts or development. The people here seem so laid back and friendly in this more rural part of Maui. They charge $10 to park at 3 lots but you can also just park along the Makena Road. There are magnificent photo ops here of the turquoise, green and bluish waters against cloud strewn skies where the sun sets to the west of Big Beach, the golden, sandy 3,000 ft stretch of sand is the longest beach in Hawaii. The beach is 100 ft wide and backed with shade trees and two lifeguard stations. A short ways from the south end of Big Beach is Secret Cove a spectacular little secluded beach. The trail to Little Beach in Makena State Park is at the northend of Big Beach at the foot of the cinder cone Puu Olai. Highly recommend a visit to Makena State Park and you will not be disappointed with its shoreline and backdrop mountainous beauty with cactus plants permeating the dry, rain shadow southwest side of Maui.

Gosh this beach is gorgeous! Sugary sand, no development, and gin clear water. Just please know that there’s a seriously steep break which in my opinion as an experienced body surfer and beach goer is NOT for amateurs. Enjoy the views but stay out of the waves if you don’t know what you’re doing!

A great hike along the shore, far from hotels and roads. We saw dolphins in the water and goats on the lava.

This is one of my favorite beaches in Maui. The sand is so fine and golden. If you’re into any water sports, this is a great location to play (as long as you’re a decent swimmer). The waves were pretty sizable and made for good fun so as long as you knew what you were doing. Would highly recommend going here.

This is a state park. Parking costs $10 per car. The lots fill up quickly. Wide beach with golden sand. Waves and tide can get rough, and no lifeguard do to Covid, so be careful. No facilities.

When visiting Maui recently, my husband and I were able to visit a few beaches, but Big Beach at Makena State Park was one of our favorites! The multiple shades of turquoise and blue waters against the clear, blue sky, the waves rolling in, the warm sandy beach and warm water, and the overall laid-back feel of the people made this a very relaxing place to enjoy the sun and surf. The currents and waves can be a little strong, but the water still feels great to swim in. The bottom is sandy. A lot children use boards to skim on the sand. With travel restrictions in place, the crowd was not too large, so there was plenty of room on the beach. We definitely want to go back!

This is a nice park and beach, available to all. Reasonable waves to surf on and a gentle slope to the beach. But a lot of people come here because it is so accessible, so I would advise going here on week days, not weekends-and earlier rather than later in the day.

This was a beautiful beach!! Everything you'd hope for on a Hawaiian beach. The beach goes on for ever. Good waves to play in and not too many people. We accidentally found Little beach by climbing over the rock bluff at the end of the beach., it turned out to be a nudist beach with all men, I saw more than I wanted to! I guess if you're into that, you may have a good time. We left, and went back to the main beach. If you drive down about a quarter of a mile past the paid parking lot, the is free parking on the roadside and public trail to the beach!!!

This is a white sand beach but the great things is that it is next to a cinder cone. that make this beach a little different than others you might get to visit.
