I was with a group that received a guided tour of the building. Not sure if that is an option for individual visitors, but I recommend it if so.
The museum was once a state building and focuses on events that it played a role in—The Louisiana Purchase, Plessy v. Ferguson, and Reconstruction.
Additionally, there are some nice views of Jackson Square from the second floor.

The museum was an excellent chunk of history and art work from local artists. The exhibits were eye catching and informative. The articles in the museum were relevant and pretty neat! The botanical exhibit on the first floor was nice but it was poorly organized or poorly explained, I’m not quite sure which. The writings beside the exhibits were confusing to me and really did explain the botanicals. I use herbs to make some traditional medicines and was really excited about this part of the museum but left rather disappointed in the exhibit, I was selfish and wanted more!
What ruined the visit was the woman at the ticket desk. A person with a service dog approached her and politely asked if they could renter because they needed to take the dog out to use the bathroom. The woman asked, “How did he get in here? I have to ask if he’s a service animal,” the person told her yes and then the ticket counter woman said, “Do you have your papers? I need to see the papers.” The person explained that according to ADA entities were not allowed to ask for papers only the service the animal provided. The woman at the ticket counter lost it! She started going off on how she didn’t care let the dog do what it wanted and run around. The started to go on telling the poor person how dogs used to throw up in there because of the heat. The person said kindly, I only asked you if I could come back in after we take him to the bathroom. The woman replied, “Do what you want I don’t care.” IT WAS AWFUL. TERRIBLE. SO DEMEANING TO THIS INDIVIDUAL WITH THE SERVICE ANIMAL. Shame on you ticket attendant lady!

I was really looking forward to seeing this place while visiting nola. The website said it was open so my wife and i worked it in our schedule. Terribly disappointed to be told it was closed for a private showing.

The Cabildo is the former power centre of old Louisiana - a Spanish style structure restored at the end of the last century after a disastrous fire. Many historical feature and some of the story of the city. Must see.

Very cute museum. I liked the history about the place. So many little things to see. Nice collection of a few artists as well which was a surprise.

We learned a fair amount at this museum (the Cabildo), but liked The Presbetyre next door better. When we were at the Cabildo, there were 3 main exhibitions. The one on the overall history of New Orleans was interesting. The contemporary art in the temporary exhibition was fun to walk through briefly.
But the exhibition about the Battle of New Orleans was disappointing because it was mostly about its pop culture history, and didn't do a great job of explaining the actual historical event. And the volume on the videos playing in the space was way too loud to be able to focus on anything else.

It’s fine but not great. The whole thing feels a little run down. There’s a few informative exhibits but you are NOT going to come away with a good overview of New Orleans history. The subject matter is all over the place: a small overview of NO culture, an exhibit of the battle of New Orleans (1814) and an art exhibit. That’s it.
If I knew ahead of time what to expect I would have taken a pass on this one.
Also, visiting the sister building on the opposite side of the cathedral, the Presbytère, requires an additional ticket.

Across from Jackson Square, this details history of the area with maps and interesting audio clips. Building itself has served many functions and is worth an hour or so.

It’s ok. Interesting if you like history, especially of the battles. Not really a lot there. It wasn’t for me. Has aircon….

This was a great place to learn about history and tour when in New Orleans. We visited with our two kids and they enjoyed it as well.

How much time would you allow to see the museum?
Skrivet 23 februari 2019
My apologies for the late response as we did not see the message until now.
Since the museum is self paced, it is hard to say, but most people spend about 2 hours. There are exhibitions on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor of the main building and there are smaller exhibitions in the Arsenal on two floors. All of this is contained in the one entrance fee for the museum.

Hi, Thank you so much for your interest in the Cabildo. While the Cabildo does not have a gift shop, the 1850 House Museum does!
The 1850 House museum is in the Lower Pontalba building on Jackson Square only steps away from the Cabildo and it does sell books for children. The gift store is operated by the Friends of the Cabildo.
