Fascinating collections, including a miniature jewelry exhibit, journalist Robert Caro and Tiffany lamps. Eclectic. Fun.

There are dozens of exhibits, with a tremendous range for people interested in a wide variety of subjects: history, art, politics, writing, material culture. We enjoyed the profound work in the Kay WalkingStick exhibit... a native American artist who in this exhibit, created works that are paired with works from the Hudson River School. Superb. Also enjoyed Women's Work, the Tiffany lamps, Lady Pink, Betye Saar and Thomas Cole.

The historical society museum has an outstanding collection of Tiffany lamps, with lots of information about their creation. A must for any fan of the period.

The society is not where to go, however, to learn about the history of New York City. That’s the Museum of the City of New York.

The society has an eclectic collection of exhibits: more art than history, but good learning experiences through the art. There’s also a replica of the Oval Office where you can have your picture taken behind the desk.

The name of the museum is a bit misleading. Most historical societies are small and just focus on their own town. While this museum had a couple of exhibits focused on nyc history, there was so much more than that. The Tiffany lamp exhibit was amazing! It had about 50 gorgeous lamps, displayed in a beautiful setting. There were a couple exhibits that placed old famous pieces of art next to recent pieces to encourage visitors to compare/contrast. Some other exhibits featured: presidents, the Oval Office, American history, women’s history, Tiffany silver, etc. There are three floors of exhibits in this beautiful building. There’s also a library for doing research, but it was closed when we were there. We spent about three hours and did not see everything.

Panel discussion New York before it was New York (March 20, 2024). Both men spoke well but the woman was incomprehensible. She mumbled and did not finish sentences. She might be a great historian but definitely should avoid commenting in front of a large audience.

I spent around 3 hours here and did see some interesting things but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. Only one room contains items from the permanent collection (furniture, paintings and various objects) and is arranged thematically to look at different aspects of New York's history. I'm not sure how many of the other displays are permanent or whether they get changed or rotated from time to time, but they were all oddly specific, not of general relevance to New York. I was surprised how many of the displays dealt with the decorative arts - a corridor of silverware, an enormous collection of Tiffany lamps, and a room of fairly modern French objects d'art - which seemed more suited to a design museum. A whole corridor is dedicated to US Presidents - I don't know a lot about American history but apart from a short period in the late 18th century this didn't really seem relevant to New York, and a recreation of the Oval Office is clearly just intended for people to take photos and post on social media! A gallery about Women's Work was general social history, not really about New York. A couple of displays called something like "The women who saved New York" (I might be paraphrasing) were frustrating as they highlighted one woman involved in the campaign to save Washington Square and another involved in the campaign to save historic SoHo architecture - I would prefer to read about these campaigns in general rather than have them shoehorned into a tick-box exercise about gender equality. (And I am a woman, by the way.) One display I did find very interesting was the one using material from the archive of the journalist and biographer Robert Caro. Although I haven't read his books, it was fascinating to see his meticulous notes, drafts and planning schedules and to read about how he conducts his research. This seemed more the sort of display I was expecting in a historical society but perhaps my expectations were wrong! There is also an interesting film about the history of New York which is screened at intervals throughout the day in the auditorium opposite the entrance.

With such a rich history of NYC I would have expected the NY Historical Society Museum to have a lot more on display as a museum. It was more like an art gallery They crammed a bunch of history into one room with some artifacts when I can only imagine the collection they have to spread throughout the space. Such a disappointment. Thought we would spend a couple of hours there and barely made it that long. We're history buffs and really expected more. Special exhibits were meh. If you like Tiffany glass, they have a lot of beautiful lamps.

Really cool, the Tiffany lamps are awesome, worth the price of admission themselves. Plenty of intriguing things to look at here.

This museum is often overshadowed by the larger Museum of Natural History nearby. However, this place should not be missed. I am embarrased to say this was our first time visiting and we've been to the city many times. It will not be our last! There is so much to see and learn and the exhibits span across many topics from art to history to engineering. There is something for everyone. I would absolutely recommend a visit here.

This is a beautiful building with different exhibits on each floor. The gift shop is great. The floor for children is also good.
