My wife and I went here for Mass and also looked around the grounds and church. The church folks were very friendly...they even gave us both leis as keepsakes for our visit. The church is really beautiful and quaint. I highly recommend to visit here or take in a Mass if your schedule allows.

What a beautiful little still-attended church with a lot of history and paintings on the inside. Great stop on your way to or from Honaunau Place of Refuge or Two Step.

The little Church of St. Benedict sits proudly on overlooking Captain Cook on Hawai’i’s Big Island. The former Parish Priest, Fr. Velghe decided to paint the walls with episodes of Old and New Testament Stories to help parishioners understand the their Faith Journies.
He’d be the first to admit he was not in the Picasso mould, but the idea to make the Faith visible was a good one. There are some nice grounds to stroll around with a little grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes and a memorial to Fr. Damien de Veuster, Saint of the Lepers on the Island of Molokai.
The little Church is an oasis in no a a n otherwise busy world.

Cool little church. Free parking. Free fresh fruit if you want (oranges and bananas) Worth the drive.

It's a nice, small, historical church. Nice place to stop for a few minutes for a photo-op. Busy road nearby, but the area around the church is calm and peaceful.

We visited the Painted Church during our recent trip to Hawaii. It is quite serene and we had a lovely walk around the property and would recommend visiting it if you happen to be in the area.

I don't understand the appeal of this place. It is crowded and noisy - two people in the back and I think one was a volunteer kept talking about cats the entire time I was there - but at least I arrived just after the tour bus had left.
Perhaps it is better during a mass. And the outside is very pretty.

The Old Painted Church is a teeny beautiful church that is a must-see! Walk around the property and get a sense of calm. There is a little fruit stand and drinks that you can take for a donation.
Their Christmas mass is in the building next to the church. We went and felt immediately welcomed. Local singers with ukuleles and also a church choir with electronic piano/organ. We were given a knit lei when we walked in. One of the only Catholic Churches still open because of Covid.

The history of this church is quite beautiful and why these pictures were painted to teach Christianity when there was a language barrier. It was a labor of love and they are incredibly beautiful. It is amazing they are in such great condition after so many years with no restoration. Weddings still take place in this beautiful little church with ocean breezes going through it. It is quite a unique place and worth a stop.

Quick little stop to see this hand painted church interior. The church was originally constructed down on the coast but was dismantled , moved up the hill and reassembled. Definitely worth a quick stop! Be sure you also stop at some of the "roadside bakeries" which are usually just a table with a cooler or two on it..... Some of the best banana bread I've ever had and great deals on local avocado, mango, papaya etc.
