I had seen the pictures, so I thought it worth showing my wife and mother. We turned onto the street, and the neighborhood was unremarkable and older, with small homes. I almost thought I did not get the directions right. But then I found it, and it is very well worth a short visit. And it is contributions only! This skilled workman was unemployed by the Great Depression in the 1930's, and started making replicas from religion, from American History, and other inspirations, one next to and atop the other. He must have been quite talented! After a while, he enjoyed it so much, he pretty much did the rock garden work for the rest of his too short life.

What a wonderful hidden gem! My family grew up in Springfield and as my Grandparents are no longer living we don’t head up this way very often anymore - but no one had ever told me about this place on any of our visits! It is only 5 minutes from where my Dad grew up - so glad I stumbled upon this via TripAdvisor! Our son is really into rocks so this was a nice stop.

Really appreciated the pamphlet with map so I could be really sure when I was telling him what he was looking at. I hope it will continue to be maintained for many more years!

This is such an awesome place. Get a pamphlet and find all of structures made out of rock by hand on the map and read the back story. Such a neat story. Just find it on google maps.

The work which had been put into creating this display must have been amazing and a labor of love. Well worth finding.

It's hard to find completely unique attractions, but I think this site is one of them.

Harry "Ben" Hartman lost his job during the Great Depression and spent the next several years building this site in his back yard. The site is in a modest residential neighborhood, but includes all kinds of detailed and clever structures.

You'll find everything here from Noah's ark, to miniature graveyards, to historical structures.

The site is free, but there is a box to leave donations for upkeep (which is more than fair).

I might be inclined to give this a "4" but the fact that it is nothing quite like anything else we've seen bumps it up a star. If you are in the area, also try to see the Frank Lloyd Wright Wescott House about 5 miles away, which is terrific.

Its pretty amazing the amount of work that has gone into this display and its also really great that they allow anyone to visit and its totally free (donation box on site though). I wouldn't reccomend travelling a long way just to see this garden but if you are in the area it is definitely worth a stop.

We went here June 25, 2020 (Thursday), and were the only ones here. It was a nice treat to have the place all to ourselves! This was my first time to the Hartman Rock Garden, and it was better than I imagined! It's located in a residential neighborhood, and parking is on either side of the street. Our gps took us right to where we needed to be.
It's free to enter, but they do have a donation box on the back side of the home. It's very creative and you can tell a lot of time was spent creating this outdoor work of art. There is a sign on the outside of the fence, and there are signs at the gate you enter to left of the house. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs/pets allowed. It is open from dusk until dawn. There is also a sign on the back of the house talking about the vision of the Hartman Rock Garden, and there's pamphlets available there in a box. There is an angel rock gate that you enter from the left side of the house. Then you turn the corner to the right and the garden is fenced in the backyard and side of a home. The grapevine trellis is a beautiful photo opp as sunlight partially shines through. There are flowers on the ground there and throughout the garden, adding to the beauty of it. There is a giant rock basket, a canoe, a cactus, birdbath, and other various exhibits with flowers. The castle with drawbridge is one of the highlights I'd say of the garden, and was one of my favorite exhibits. Another of my favorite scenes, The Lord's Supper, was located on that side of the garden as well. Noah's Ark rounds up my 3rd favorite scene, and is also located on that side of the garden too. There is a Native American/Pioneer scene and Death Valley exhibit. There are many patriotic rock pieces in the garden including the Liberty Bell, Lincoln's Cabin, the Washington Memorial, A colonial house with women sewing the American Flag, colonial soldiers, and more. My 70 year old father has a bad hip and knee, and he had no problem walking in the garden. You could probably spend anywhere from as little as 15 minutes to an hour or two depending on how much time you want to take it all in. It is definitely worth seeing!

Found out about this attraction through Roadside America app. A rock garden made into different displays is pretty cool to look at. We were only there for 15 minutes but it is worth it if you enjoy seeing odd roadside attractions in America.
