It was a rainy day and we decided to take drive out to Mount York Lookout. Along the way on the left there is Barden's Lookout with lovely views to the West over Hartley and the plains below.
At the end of the road is Mount York Lookout which is also a camping area. There were people camped and seemed to be getting organized to go climbing.
There was a huge obelisk recognizing the achievements of our early explorers, Wentworth, Blaxland and Lawson. It was when they reached this point they realized that they had achieved the crossing of the Blue Mountains. It was actually only a few years later that a road was completed following the route discovered by the explorers.
At the end of the road is Mount York Lookout which is also a camping area. There were people camped and seemed to be getting organized to go climbing.

Great place to visit with views across the Hartley Valley towards 40 bends. Would suggest to consider a jacket if you wish to stay awhile as the wind can be strong and cold at all times of the year.

Traversing the Blue Mountains (1813) was the most significant accomplishment in the expansion of the early settlement of Sydney Town.
This point was where that early expedition arrived, finally traversing the "Indomitable Barrier" and opening up the Western Plains to grazing and agriculture.
The huge obelisk and other information panels at this site give a very good account of the significance of this site.
There are several walking tracks that begin from Mount York, but for me the most significant is Cox's Road, which was the first "road" down into the Hartley Valley.
Should you have time, a drive down Mt Victoria Pass (convict built bridge remnants still observable), into Hartley Vale to visit the Hartley Vale Cemetery is a "walk back into the past".
Local tourist centres can supply a map to find this Lookout.
Additionally, the views from the Lookout are exceptional.
Camping sites are nearby.

Easy to locate, this view is sensational over the Hartley Valley.
Would have rated 5 stars had the pathway been more accessable for our older companions.

Interesting little lookout at the end of the road in Mount Victoria. Worth checking out and see people camping in the area. Views across Hartley... last visit my parents were down and i didnt take many pics... Its nice place to check out if you're here and there are some walks you can do. We haven't explored it fully.

The lookout is about 5k from the main road through the Blue Mountains, and well worth the small diversion.
The lookout marks the place where the early European explorers reached, looked west and decided that they had found a viable track to cross the Blue Mountains. This event was quickly followed by the foundation of Bathurst, the first interior town in Australia, the migration of people and sheep over the following decades.
The lookout itself was established in the early 20th century and affords awesome views from the sandstone cliffs across rolling hills and farmland. In addition, it is the starting point for several walking trails. Less crowded than the 3 sisters in Leura, Mount York is well worth a visit to put the Blue Mountains into historic perspective.

THIS is the best spot to gain an OVERVIEW of the crossing of the Blue Mountains.
Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson's story is well told and the view into Harley valley is breathtaking.
TIP: Good parking and Picnic area for eating. No shop or toilet facilities. So come prepared.
TIP: Walking from here can take you along famous Cox's road and be prepared with water, good walking shoes and Not for the novice.

Easy to access and all weather road. Several good lookouts along the way too. Turn off the Hwy at the Caltex service station and follow Mt York road to the end.

Certainly worth a visit to explore some Blue Mountains history. Brilliant views top it off. A trip to explore some of the history of our west expansion 200 yrs ago.
