Thank you all for your comments. My father grew up in Lithgow, and on our regular trips to Jenolan Caves in the 50's, he'd point out the pass to us as we drove along the highway, the other side of the valley. Although we'd been to Mt York, and walked a fair way down Cox's Road from there (and along other easy to reach sections elsewhere in the Mountains) we never got to walk this. Recently I've been thinking about it again, but was concerned about the climb back up - I'm now in my mid-70's (but aerobically fit from a lot of walking around here). From what you say, I'd be well able to walk this provided I took my time climbing back up.

As a keen interest in local history of human crossing of the blue mountains it has been interesting to be able to walk a section of the old Great West Rd. So much of these old road which developed Central West NSW are now gone. If you are into history worth the short walk from the top and back, it an easy grade suitable for young childern.

This is an easy walk. It is downhill first & uphill on the return but don't be put off by this because it is not a steep uphill track since we took the same time to go downhill as uphill 35 mins each way. There is a nice view across the valley & a few historic sights along the track including an historic water trough. There are some interesting sights along the way. We accessed The Berghofer Pass Track by turning off the Great Western Highway at Mount Victoria at the Caltex Service Station onto Mount York Road. There is a sign on Mt York Rd showing distance to the start of the walking tracks. There is no designated parking but you will be able to find somewhere to park out of the way on Berghofer Drive. The Berghofer Pass walking track is across the road. After our walk we drove to the end of Mount York Road (5 mins) to the Mount York Lookout which was worth the drive. Besides the view you will find more signs with historical information & also toilets. Worth the extra few minutes drive.

This road was the original highway to the west and provides an easy walk alongside the highway from the top of Mount Victoria Pass to the bottom.
There are a number of signs on the way down and it is interesting to see how they constructed the road and the culverts they put in place. From time to time the suggestion is made that this route would be more acceptable than the highway but nothing ever seems to come of the suggestions.
For history buffs, Mr, Berghofer and his wife are buried in Mount Victoria cemetery.

Good walk but nothing spectacular.
Hard to find, reviews in here helped us find it. One way is all downhill then is all uphill back.
Couple of good views but again nothing overly spectacular. Nice medium walk both ways.

We had A LOT of trouble getting to the start of the walk. TripAdvisor says it is in Lithgow, and Google says its off the Great Western Highway (GWH). It's actually off Mt York Rd, closest to the GWH in Mt Victoria. There's a Caltex servo on the corner of Mt York Rd and the GWH, that's where you need to turn.
Parking area is a bit abysmal, a small rocky section off to the right of Mt York Rd about 3 km down from the GWH. The beginning of THIS walk, the Berghofer's Pass, is on the other side of the road. The path (the old road) is quite rocky but there are some spectacular views of the cliff and valley.
There is only one picnic table seated area and once you pass the sign about the stone viaduct that was part of Mitchell's 1832 Victoria Pass, there really isn't anything to see. The old road eventually leads to the GWH, which is currently under construction. I'd suggest you go in the morning or when it is cool as there isn't much shade along the way and not many places to sit.
The sign says it takes 1.5 hours but we took 2.5 hours because we stopped often and walked on the slow side.

This is a pleasant walk on the old road, which was closed to motor traffic in 1920.

The entrance to Berghofer's is on Mt. Hay Road in Mt. Victoria.

You will see a small car park and some hiking signage on your right as you come down the hill from the Great Western Highway.

If you want to go on a long hike, you can leave from the eastern side of the car park and follow the Lawson's Long Alley trail for 17 kms.

The Berghofer's Pass trail is on the other side of Mt. Hay Rd.

It is rated as an easy walk of 4.5 km. The walking surface is broad and even as you are walking on an old road.

Great views into the Hartley Valley as the road winds its way down the slope.

Well worth the walk or ride up Berghofer's pass. Easy ride on mountain bike or nice steady walk up the original Mt Victoria pass. Park at bottom of pass near RMS stockpile's and follow single track till it leads to start of main track. Plenty of history and special views to be had.

This historic road is a bushwalking highway of old making it very safe and scenic for people not so fit and you can have a picnic at the table half way down. it's only a few K all up if that and comes out at the highway. Come back the same way. A must see for all as the old stonework is to be revered.
