Most if not all of the reviews for Powder Valley are so positive and rightfully so but, I must say, and this is late coming, about 4-5 yrs back a volunteer in the museum there told me it's not safe. There were visitors behind me in a line so I didn't question this man to explain what he meant but I have never run into any issues except.....

I do want to point out this volunteer steered me away from visiting for over two years and that, along with a man I saw who had severe damage to his face and apparently no plastic/cosmetic surgery done, seen walking down the exit road with loafers on and not dressed for outdoor activities, kept me away.

I should point out it was about closing time when I first saw this man and I was unfortunately the only car left in the parking lots. Whoa! Not good. Be safe. I got scared when I saw him and made a dash for my car; I kept away for a long time because you have to be careful and diligent no matter how safe a place is reported to be.

This review is late but I must say that this is one of the most beautiful and serene places I have ever been. I took my wife and children here and was blown away that I had never heard or been. The indoor educational portion is well done as well.

They have two trails that are both great hikes that aren't too challenging. One is longer than the other, so you've got a choice of which one you'd like to tackle.

The trails were clearly mark and easy to find and follow. The location was beautiful and the fauna was labeled so you could learn about the type of trees. There were plenty of places to sit and enjoy the scenery.

My husband and I did every trail in about an hour, so if you’re in good shape it won’t be much of a challenge. But!! Coming here with kids would be excellent as most kids would be able to do these trails with no issue. The visitors center is still closed and so are the restrooms - but - they do have portapotties.

This is a great place to go with the family and walk the trails and visit the center. Especially with the nice weather. I'm not sure if it is open with the virus situation, but when things break it is nice just to take a walk and check out God's creations.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is the best. Powder Valley is located in St. Louis County, but you feel you are in the woods. Three hiking trails, one of them Wheelchair Accessible. Small indoor exhibit/education center with restrooms.

The Nature Center is great with a wonderfully helpful staff. The children's section downstairs has lots of hands-on activities for the kids. The upstairs has the information desk, a small gift shop, aquariums with animals (salamanders, snakes, turtles) and large windows looking out on a group of bird feeders. We walked on the 1-1/5 mile Hickory Ridge Trail which runs along a creek most of the time. There were several bridges, some (3?) steep climbs uphill and one steep downhill. There are many benches (I think 10) on the trail for resting or listening to the birds. With the trail being asphalt, you don't have to worry about taking a hike after a rain. Hope to go back in the spring. And it's all free.

Whether you are visiting St. Louis, live here, or maybe especially if you need a break from a road trip, go to Powder Valley Nature Center! It's right near where Highway 270 and 44 come together in Southwest St. Louis County, and it is a great place to stretch your legs and let the kids have some fun.

While it IS a great place for kids, especially the nature center (where they can hear, see and touch things), adults can get something out of it, too. I really enjoyed seeing some of live Missouri native fish, and getting up close and personal, through the glass, with some snapping turtles. Quite handsome devils!

They have several trails, the longest being 1-1/5 miles, and all of the trails are paved. Hickory Ridge Trail, the longest, is paved but not handicapped accessible, I suppose because it is very steep in places and has occasional uneven pavement. These woods are right next to Highway 270 and 44, so it was a bit strange to be in the middle of nature and hear the roar of the highway, but it is a great place to be IN nature and also be close to civilization.

Parking is right near all the trailheads, and there are restrooms in the nature center, and in the little building next to it. The nature center building is open every day but Sunday and Monday, 8 to 5, and the grounds are open every day from 8 to 8 (the brochure says 8 to 6 during daylight savings).

All of the volunteers that I talked to were very helpful and knowledgeable, and were even able to tell me about the Emmenegger Nature Park across the highway, which is also part of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Although this park is tucked away in a small corner of Kirkwood, it has three beautiful hiking trails that run along creeks, up and down hills, and through woods with wildlife often nearby. You can even choose a short trail that is wheelchair-accessible as well as two longer ones. As if that wasn't enough, there is a modern conservation center and museum on site that has interesting exhibits worth seeing. A great place to explore an island of nature in the middle of a suburban environment!
