Native plants in their normal settings
sep. 2021 • Par
There were multiple settings in which to see plants in their native atmosphere, including prairie, woods, and big settings. The gardens are part of a park that is nearly the size of New York’s Central Park! The wood chipped trail is uneven but extremely soft due to the shredded wood. It is easy to follow and you can take as long as you want. Native plants from all over the Minnesota have been collected and planted here.

quiet place in nature
sep. 2021
This garden is on the northwest side as part of a larger Theodore Wirth park that is sort of an arboretum surrounding a small wetland/pond area. The open areas have wildflowers in a naturalistic setting, not gathered together like in a botanical garden, but more like one might find on a hike. The mulched walks through it wind around a bit, and do not always seem to match the map obtained from the entry, but it is small enough that you do not get lost. The shade and naturalization make for a pleasant place to spend quiet time.

Great place!
maj 2021
This was a perfect way to spend a spring hour or so. They do a great job of labeling and we learned a lot. There are a number of COVID restrictions in place, even though everything was outside. They're letting in groups every three minutes, which seems quick, but the line to get in quickly formed behind us. Once in the garden, you are required to walk in one direction, instead of wandering at your leisure wherever you'd like. Overall, a great place to walk and explore.

Beautiful wildflower garden in the spring
apr. 2021
My husband and I decided that it would be a good morning to go see the wildflowers in this native plant garden located at Theodore Wirth Park. It was a warm day finally for Spring at 65 degrees and we thought that the wildflowers would be out.

This garden opened on April 27, 1907; the lead volunteer who took charge of the garden was a retired botany teacher named Eloise Butler. She collected, preserved, and catalogued numerous wild plants in this garden, creating a fantastic display. In 1933 she died on her way to work; she was 81 years old.

During April and May, the Woodland Display is the primary feature. That means that woodland plants such as Trilliums (both purple and white), Wild Ginger, Rue Anemone, and Bloodroot are on full display. We saw all of these plants and more, with the Purple Trilliums being the most spectacular. Also spectacular were the drifts of Bloodroot with its white flowers.

The park was metering entrance of groups at 4 minutes between groups with a request that 6 feet be maintained within households. We had no problem with that even though we stopped to take a lot of photos and discuss the different plants. The group behind us never encroached or pressured us.

The trees in the garden are also of interest with Black Cherry (which we have in our back yard) and Black Walnut (we have at our farm) clearly labeled. There is a boardwalk to take you over a creek and through the marshy area. I remember going here many years ago with my then boyfriend (now husband) and getting wet feet….

At the exit to the garden was a tall tree with an 8 week-old Great Horned Owl on a branch. It had fluffy-fuzzy feathers and huge golden eyes. Everyone was quietly stopping to gaze at him. The Head Gardener was there and was telling people about the baby, it was a real treat to just to stand at such a beautiful baby owl.

There is paid parking just at the front of the garden at $1 per hour, and no entrance fee for the garden itself. During COVID restrictions, the trail is one-way and just over a mile long. Plan to spend 45 minutes to 1 hour in the garden. Definitely a great place to visit, it is technically in Golden Valley but most locals refer to it as being in Minneapolis.

Oasis in Wirth Park

This is a stunning space in early spring, summer and fall (closed in winter). Highly educational and well designed. You'll be surprised at how much time you might spend there.

Native Flora & Fauna in the Heart of the City
sep. 2020 • Par
Having planted a native flower garden two years ago, it was really nice to be able see some of my plants in a large, natural surrounding. It is not an arboretum atmosphere, but instead an opportunity to experience what Minneapolis was like before it was settled. A very nice, tranquil walk. Will definitely return.

It's late October- Gardens closed
okt. 2019
I went on weekday in late October and found the gates to the Wildflower Gardens locked. They are only open on the weekend through October. However, I hiked around the bog trail and found the tamarack trees in their vibrant golden fall color. Lots of trails in the park for hikers, bikers, and skiers in the winter. A refuge in the city.

This is a very nice, quiet place to walk the trails and see some plants and birds close up. The trails have a nice covering of woodchips to walk on. It would be nice to have a more detailed map of the trails before you start so you can see all of it.

Mini back country walk
juli 2019 • Familj

Nice location for a peaceful evening.

Flower lovers in summer this is the best place to visit.

Remember : Too many bugs. Beautiful butterflies and variety of bees, Ruby throated humming birds and Northern Cardinal 😍 😍 😍
Plants and Flora species are immense.

Wear appropriate clothing and shoes to walk around for the season. Bug spray recommended. Carry binoculars and cameras will be of great use. Snowy times trails will be closed. We saw a turkey moving around and there are staff to guide at the entrance. Parking lot is paid parking. Per hour a dollar or depends on your park and stay type.

Near to this, there is also a beach/ lake where space is allocated for swimming and changing with water facilities. People were enjoying a great weekend evening here.

We enjoyed the trail walks and some walks need to be shown a trail pass. Restrooms are at only few spots. Water fountain at few spaces. Great for cycling and walking.
Snowy conditions trails will be closed check before visiting, depending on season of visit.
