The Booth Escape tour is a wonderful experience. It is a 12 hour bus tour, at least, but the information and destinations were extremely interesting.

Due to a system glitch from Tripadvisor, my first review never published. I don't know what I wrote for that review and it is sadly lost to history. What isn't lost to history is...history at the Surratt House Museum. I went here and Henry Mudd's house and thought it really was good going to both in one day. Learn some history people! Don't be stupid.

The original structure was built as a middle-class plantation house in 1852. It is a two-story, 19th-century wood-frame structure. It is a 40-by-32-foot (12.2 by 9.8 m) rectangular building with a gable roof. There are five windows on both floors in the western face of the house. A small porch with a gabled roof protects the front door. The rear (eastern side) of the house mirrors that of the front (western side). The interior of the house features a fireplace and chimney on the north and south ends of the building. A single stairway lead from the first to the second floor. The exterior of the house is clapboard, and on the north side of the house is a verandah with a skillion roof that extends the width of the house

Mary Jenkins met John Harrison Surratt in 1839. An orphan, John Surratt was adopted by Richard and Sarah Neale of Washington, D.C., a wealthy couple who owned a farm. Jenkins and Surratt wed in August 1840. The Surratts lived at a mill in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and later at John's childhood home on a farm in the District of Columbia. In 1851, the farmhouse burned to the ground (an escaped family slave was suspected of setting the blaze). Within a year, John Surratt purchased 200 acres of farmland near what is now Clinton, and by 1853 he constructed a tavern and an inn there. Mary initially refused to move herself and the children into the new residence. She took up residence at the farm again, but John sold both the Neale farm and Foxhall in May 1853 to pay debts and she was forced to move back in with him in December. The area round the tavern was officially named Surrattsville in 1853. Within a short period of time, a post office was installed inside the tavern. John Surratt was the hamlet's first postmaster. In 1854, John built a hotel as an addition to his tavern, and called it Surratt's Hotel. Over the next few years, Surratt acquired or built a carriage house, corn crib, general store, forge, granary, gristmill, stable, tobacco curing house, and wheelwright's shop.

We toured the museum in the afternoon. Our docent's name was William. He was willing to personalize the tour and was excellent! Most of the house or tavern is air conditioned, except for 'Aunt Rachel's' room. William mentioned that only three items are from the Surratt home, the other things are period authentic. Because the house was originally sold at auction, that isn't surprising. It would be good for teens, especially those with an interest in history in general or specifically Civil War history.

Went on a trail ride at Piscataway Stables down the road and so checked this place out as it was nearby. It was so interesting! We watched the movie The Conspirators before we went. The guides were very knowledgeable and they even had objects on display. Tours are on the half-hour. The house is nicely air-conditioned. Great place to visit. My 11 and 14yr olds enjoyed it too.

This house is well worth visiting just to learn more about the Lincoln assassination, the Surratt family and Maryland history. There are not a lot of remaining pieces original to the home, but it is very well preserved. Our docent was a little long winded and I think it took us at least an hour or longer to tour the home.

This was well worth the stop on a nice summer day. The docent was well informed and educated. Also, VERY detailed which is what we like! A very nice stop in Maryland.

My daughter is a dedicated Lincoln Assassination buff. So, we had to stop and visit this site due to it's connection to Mary Surratt. We had a good time and the docent was very informative. My daughter was disappointed as there were only a handful of actual historical artifacts that were actually from the time of the Assassination

I love the Lincoln assassination and wanted to d this trip forever. I was quite disappointed to find that there are only 5 or 6 original pieces in the house

I took the John Wilkes Booth Escape Tour sponsored by the Surratt House Museum. It was a fantastic road trip of history! We met at the museum to get on the bus (driven by Darwin, best bus driver ever!) and the trip was narrated by Dave Taylor. Dave is a teacher and it shows. He delivers the information with occasional corny jokes (which I love!) and clearly loves his topic. He lives and breathes this topic so he knows more than I'll ever learn! Nice stop for lunch at Captain Billy's halfway through the day. It is a long day but they had prepared us for that. Lots of bathroom breaks, which for me, was much appreciated. Definitely visit the museum. Docents love their topic too. And the lovely part is, a lot of history is still controversial. I believe that Dr. Mudd is innocent, most people don't. Had a good, respective, knowledgeable conversation about it with folks at the museum.
