Many Trails to Explore
dec. 2019
Amberjack Park is 225 acres of mostly scrub and pine flatwoods, although marshes are present at some times during the year. One primary attraction of Amberjack is Lemon Lake, a seasonal lake that dries up during the summer but offers spectacular views of wading birds during the rainy season. Birds commonly seen there include great blue herons, great egrets, little blue herons, roseate spoonbills, black-necked stilts, kingfishers, and a variety of ducks and ibis, as well as other species. The forested areas of the park hold dozens of varieties of songbirds and raptors, and an eagle’s nest sometimes has a breeding pair inhabiting it. Wildlife includes bobcats, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, squirrels, and similar, as well as the protected gopher tortoise. Native plants are in bloom at every time of the year, much to the surprise of visitors from colder climates. A December walk revealed at least a dozen varieties of flowers, as well as interesting seeds and fruits. Trails vary from grassy and well-worn to deep sand that requires care and attention in walking. One downfall of the park is that the available trail maps are useless. We’ve gone on many nature walks there with experienced guides, and becoming disoriented is not unusual. The best technique seems to be to use Google Earth to print a satellite view and use that for navigation. Parking is available for 15-20 cars but the park has no restrooms. Be sure to bring water, a hat or visor for sun protection, and bug repellent (although that’s not a major problem). The only amenity is a sheltered picnic table at the entrance kiosk.
