This is the most rewarding hike in the Phoenix area! The views from the top are worth the effort.
However, word to the wise: put on some good shoes, it’s slippery in many parts if it rains.
Also there’s no reason to go hike there during the hot summer months no matter how much water you bring along: don’t underestimate the Phoenix heat.
I saw many families with kids so technically anyone can complete this hike. However I’ve also seen many people turning around.
Know your limitations because it might take a while for help to arrive!
Will definitely return!

The views on these mountain trails are absolutely breathtaking, but the climb itself is a tough one! If you are planning on climbing (especially during extreme temperatures) make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, good hiking shoes, and a light snack. The trip down is just as rigorous as the climb up! We took several breaks so we could enjoy the spectacular views and took a lot of photos! It was definitely a great and exhausting experience!

Stunning view but only for experienced hikers! We were very excited to climb camelback mountain but soon realized that the hike is extremely difficult. Not all sources online really say, that you do need some kind of experience and you should be in good shape in order to successfully climb the mountain. We saw many people on the side of the trail having heat strokes or just heat exhaustion, because many of them underestimated the hike. It is extremely steep and it’s more climbing than hiking.
The parking situation is very frustrating. Not enough parking opportunities for all the people visiting. We ended up parking at the Marriotts Resort parking lot and walked 15 min to the trailhead.

Camelback Mountain, ( 2700 ft.), is a perfect tourist activity in Phoenix as it is a relatively short jaunt with pleasurable views. On the base of the mountain at 6 A. M., half asleep, armed with trial mix, water, coffee and climbing boots, I opted for the Echo Trail. It was challenging .......like tackling a stair-master and I was soon sweating like mad. I spotted prickly pear cacti along the mountain side and as I forged up, I heard the rattle of a diamond back. I remained quiet for a while and edged down the slope to circumvent the reptile and continue on my way up. Over an hour from embarkation I reached the top and extended my arms in a 'Jesus on the cross' figure to enjoy the balminess of the wind. Coming down seemed a breeze. Camelback Mountain is such an Arizona hiking destination.

Started shortly after sunrise on the Echo Trail. Cool temps, busy trail. Strenuous hike with rewarding views. Take water, a 2litre Camelback bladder was more than enough for me.

Parking is a challenge. I had a friend drop me off on the Cholla side and pick me up on the Echo side later. I would definitely start on the Cholla side as it is a little less challenging than going up Echo but still very challenging with steep climbs and rock climbing in parts. I would recommend doing both sides with either friends or using Uber to get and from. You don’t want to have to park 3/4 mile away from the entrance and use your energy. The 360 views on top are spectacular!! Well worth the adventure. Getting down is slow and methodical (at least for me). Great hike but go early as it gets crowded the later you go.

Absolutely amazing hike. Various different elevation. Some sections are difficult to hike. Recommended for those who have some experience in hiking. Wear comfortable clothes and take bottle water

Definitely challenging and rewarding! It was very useful to have read the reviews before heading out as the parking was definitely a challenge (Lyft worked well, as I went up on Echo trail and came down on Cholla. 2.5 hr round trip)

I was very skeptical for two reasons: I am significantly afraid of heights and have never rock climbed. We read reviews to see if it was manageable for people who are physically active and in good health. We kept seeing reviews write about “rock shuffling.” We tried to YouTube what that meant and Google it. Two of us were skeptical and a little frightened after seeing, “double black diamonds” and some people say it’s very advanced.
Well, we did it and loved it.
In my opinion, rock shuffling is being able to navigate where to step next on large boulders almost the entire time. Tons of steps and if you can do a box step while exercising, that’s the highest step I encountered on the trail.
On the way down, your arms and shoulders get some work holding the handrails to navigate where to step.
The only thing that scared me the entire time related to heights was at the very top - but only on one side of the summit. It’s big enough that you don’t have to go near it. There are no hard/fast drop offs or ledges on one side and the views are amazing. Everything is a gradual slope. Don’t get me wrong, if you fell you could seriously get hurt or die. I’m just talking about the fear of a drop off.
Someone recommended we bring 4 bottles of water each. You’ll need BOTH of your hands to do this. We had a cheap adidas string backpack to put keys and water in.
Saw a couple folks carrying a Nalgene bottle or plastic water bottle without having use of both hands, bad idea.
Also saw at least five people in sandals. This is not a Teva hike. Need decent tennis shoes. This trail is busy with people passing on way up and way down frequently on a weekend. It was cool and 50’s when we went. If the weather was in the 80’s or above this review may be different. No critters come out in the colder weather so it was not a worry.
I think it took us about three hours, but we were focused on seeing views and just enjoying it.
A mom carrying an 11-month-old in a carrier did it, a man in his seventies does it TWICE a day. Several people run it…..
I hope this helps make your decision. I’ll add some photos.
Hope you enjoy it! The way down take 1/3 of the time!! Happy hiking!!

Visiting Phoenix for a few days in April to attend a wedding. I will be alone but want to do some hiking. What would be best trails, safe, and easily accessible from town via Uber?
Skrivet 12 februari 2020
Camelback, Piestowa peak (there are also a lot of other trail at the base of piestowa). I suggest hiking shoes both are great climbs to do alone always other people around and they are well maintained. Enjoy

Hi, I am a deaf guy from India. I know English. Would it be safe for me to trek Camelback mountain on my own? Are there markers to guide trekkers to the top and back? Can I expect any help from other trekkers/security guys, etc? I plan to trek this Tuesday.
Skrivet 27 maj 2019
Hello, bring a lot of water. Espacialy if you got during the heat peak of the day. Do not go off the trail. In my opinion, Echo trail is ''safer''. Take your time and it's going to be fine. Also bring some snacks to give you energy.
Skrivet 27 maj 2019
Hello, how long is the hike? If we only have 2-3 hours is it doable? Average hikers. Thanks!
Skrivet 26 maj 2019
If you go up and down from the Echo Canyon trailhead, you can definitely do it in 2-3 hours. If you do the whole length from Echo Canyon to Cholla trailhead or vice versa and have to get an Uber or walk back to your car, maybe not.
Skrivet 26 maj 2019
What's the average temperature during Camelback hike in August?
Skrivet 31 augusti 2018
It depends on the time of day! It can be 114 degrees at 1 PM. Best to hike VERY early in the AM and bring more water than you think you need. Lately the average temp has been 104.
Skrivet 31 augusti 2018
yes there are at the trail start but nothing after that, that is the same for 90% of the trails we have done in Arizona and California.
Skrivet 31 januari 2018
How do you get in touch with anyone at this resort or restaurant? I have called no less than 20 times and no one ever answers. I am using the 855 number on the website. Is there another number??
Skrivet 4 januari 2018
Call the Camelback Inn Hotel on Lincoln Drive in Phoenix,Arizona to answer your resort and restaurant questions.
Skrivet 5 januari 2018
Is hiking Camelback in early July, this weekend in fact doable with the temps? Starting at sunrise?
Skrivet 30 juni 2017
It is probably doable any time of year or day given you are in shape and you prepare properly. In shape- are you used to walking longer distances, relatively strong legs and do you have good balance? Properly prepared- wear, hat, long sleeve shirt, decent shoes (trail runner types), lots of water(2 liters ideal), something for energy(energy bars, fruit, etc), and sun screen. Maybe even a badana that you can wet and tie around you neck for additional cooling.
That said- sunrise will be a great time to climb camelback! Have fun and post pictures!! :-)
