It takes a little planning and walking through the forest, but it is absolutely worth it. You will see corals, turtles, exotic fish and basically feel like you are in an aquarium. The water is so clear and the beach in the morning is mostly in the shade.
Try and go early, because there are limited parking spots. But even if it’s later in the day, you will probably have a chance, because people come, dip, and leave. This is a rocky beach, people are not staying for the entire day with umbrellas etc.
To get into the water, pay attention to the slippery rocks, some type of shoes are helpful, or fins even better. For this reason, it can be challenging to get into the water with small kids.

Stunning coral and fish. We went pretty far out and didn’t even realize it because the water is so calm. Huge turtle came to say hi within two feet of us! Thank you to the locals who allow visitors to such a beautiful place.

Crowded with people who at times are not even able to just float. So it comes as a surprise that the reef, corals, sponges and wildlife seem incredible intact. Very nice snorkeling, easily accessible with the car (if you find a parking spot)

EXCELLENT snorkeling! The “beach” is rocks. They get really slippery near the water where they’re wet. Use extreme caution getting in and out of the water. Once in, the snorkeling is tip-top. Today I saw six turtles and a shark about 4’ long. Reef on either side with a huge middle area that’s mostly sandy. Last time I was here I saw an octopus.
The walk in is about 1/4 miles through the forest. It’s wide and flat. Very nice stroll. Parking is a challenge, but if you get there by 9am, it’s pretty easy.
To me, the possible challenging parking and entry/egress from the water is totally worth it.

Family went snorkeling here while my husband and I sat under the shade of the trees on level ground above the rocks. Enjoyed the walk through the magical, mystical trees from the parking area to the beach. The snorkelers liked this spot! Lots of roosters and chickens, too.

We drove about an hour up from the Wailea area to snorkel here. It was well worth it. We saw turtles, large trumpetfish, an octopus, squid, a barracuda, large parrotfish and many other colorful reef fishes.
Some advice: Plan to get there at 8:30 AM. You’ll be more likely to get parking & it will be less crowded. There is a lookout just before mile marker 32. Access to a sandy beach is the first parking area past mm 32. Look for the green railing and steps down to the beach. The best snorkeling area is about 0.3 miles further just past the one lane bridge. This is a big rock beach. Do not plan to lay out or play in the sand. There is no sand. Just a difficult rocky access to the water. But the snorkeling is phenomenal. Stay close to the rocks on either the left or right side and go out as far as you can. We saw more fish and the turtles on the left side.

We visited here twice as we enjoyed it so much the first time. Get here early (7:30-08:00) to park in the very small parking lot (with the portacabins) otherwise you’ll have to take a chance by the side of the road.
Nice walk along the way through the woods, enjoying the company of wild chickens.
The beach is very stony/rocky, but worth the trek once you make it into the water. Lovely and clear for snorkelling, enjoying a huge variety of fish and of course the odd turtle…
Definitely make time if you’re nearby.

The bay itself is fine but not better than two steps in Big Island. The parking lot is horrible. It only has 5 to 6 parking spaces. It doesn't level up with the main road. The curb is much lower than the road. It damages my midsize Nissan front bumper when I come back up.

Muddy, treacherous walk if raining. Just remember that if it's raining you will get dirty, you will slip and you may fall. Good shoes are a must in rainy conditions as the walk through the forest (although beautiful) can be 15 dangerous minutes. Don't bring a chair..honestly if you are willing to try to balance a chair on the rocks..good for you. Personally, it took everything I had to get to the water in one piece with all my gear on the rainy day we were there. I even fell getting into the water and badly bruised my wrist because the rocks are so slippery and slimy. Once in the water, it's really beautiful and I saw two turtles and many, many fish. It was some of the best snorkeling on Maui but when I saw the catamaran tours I thought..."that would have been the safer way to go" but I'm sure those tours are costly. If you want to go on the cheap (looks like a cash donation is appreciated for crossing the land) this is the way to go, but bring only the essentials and enjoy. Also keep things hidden in your vehicle to be safe.

We went to the bay for the snorkeling - and the snorkeling along the edges was good. One has to park by the road and then walk a short trail through a forest to the bay. There were signs where we parked advising us not to walk through private property and directing us to the trail head. One thing I didn't see noted in other reviews (or failed to notice at the time I was deciding whether to go to Honolua Bay) is that the forest walk is a strong feature itself; it's beautiful. The beach is made up of big rocks vs. sand - so not a beach if you're looking to sunbathe vs. snorkel.

Planning to go tomorrow (Tuesday). What time does the parking fill up by on weekdays? Also, are there restroom facilities here?
Skrivet 23 juli 2019
Is there a good time to snorkel there? We plan on going in the late afternoon. Is there good surf report online for the bay?
Skrivet 7 april 2019
It's also about the timing of recent rains. Recent rains = river mud killing the visibility.

Hi, I'm staying in Kihei and looking to decide on which snorkeling tour to go on - Molokini or Honolua Bay. I am aware I'm closer to Ma'aalea but my biggest concern is which snorkeling trip will yield most sighting of sea creatures. I'm looking to go the third week of July. I've read mixed reviews that Molokini is overcrowded and not a lot of fish to see but thought to ask here to see if any of you had been to both. Many thanks!
Skrivet 4 juli 2018
We saw turtles at Honolua - none at Molokini. The water will depend on when you go - sometimes it is rougher due to weather etc. there fish at both places, but more variety at Molokini.

Is it a hike to get to the bay? We have our son with us and wondering if it’ll be too difficult with him in a carry pack
Skrivet 25 juni 2018
It is a easy 5 minute walk downhill from roadside parking. You may have to walk across a small stream, but it is shallow. Should not be a problem, and it is an amazing walk through the tree canopy!
Skrivet 25 juni 2018
How steep is the water? I can swim but I'm not a strong swimmer. I didn't have a life jacket. Should I be concerned?
Skrivet 1 juli 2016
Well it's deeper than a person can stand so,,it could be a problem, but usually when you snorkel you aren't actually swimming as such you kind of float face down,a life jacket is designed to keep your head out of the water, and most rolling you onto your back...a better option is a flotation device like a swim noodle or a paddle board, you can rest on it or go a little deeper at times for closer looks, best if it was tethered to you somehow so you can't get separated ,a wet suit may be the answer too as they increase your flotation and keep you warm,it can get pretty cold after being out in the water for awile
Skrivet 4 juli 2016
Hi! Is there snorkeling equipment to rent at Honolua Bay ?
Skrivet 3 april 2016
No......go to a reputable shop such as snorkel bobs on your first day or so and rent for the day or the week,if you wear glasses they can set you up with different lense on for each side if that's what you need, but remember you will be happier with better quality gear stay away from cheap, toy, type stuff
Skrivet 4 juli 2016
For early May, if you were to do one snorkeling boat trip, would you go to Honolua Bay or to Molekini?
