We decided to book this tour - as a break from driving - and to absorb the scenery!
Despite the long day it was so well worth it- our sunset BBQ and glass of sparkling (or two or three) watching the changing colours of Uluru was magical- chatting to overseas visitors amid the stunning backdrop was a delight. We learnt much about our Indigenous ancestry from our informative guides Eddie and Dariah.
Thank you

Though the tour starts in the very early morning at 6am and only back to the hotel past midnight. It is still well worth the visit. The tour is well organized, with sufficient time for toilets and meals. Lunch and sunset dinner with sparkling wine in front of Uluru is amazing. The tour guide, Eddie provides very detailed info on the history and development of the area. His story telling skills is fantastic.
Only compliant is the seat belt of the coach bus, which is very tight even for a regular sized Asian female.

Our guides Lafe and Eddie obviously very knowledgable and passionate. We had the perfect amount of stops to break up the long day so it went surprisingly fast. Great experience and would definitely recommend.

If you can only do one tour - do this one - it left the Uluru tour for dead probably because our guide, Bluey was so good. His knowledge about the geology, botany and history of the area was extensive. Pretty rough terrain but the ocky was able to handle it - the walks were beautiful and the picnic and afternoon tea break welcome. I can really recommend this one.

Palm Valley is an absolute gem to behold. Stunningly beautiful - rugged, unique and prehistoric. However you need a proven company to get you in here and give you some of the geology and history of the area. Emu Run do a first rate to trip here that includes visiting Hermannsburg - a delightful historic community.

Firstly we’d like to thank Life, Michael and Dan, for a superlative experience. Their knowledge and humor made a long day completely manageable. The stories and explanations were spot on and truly helped us appreciate the people and the land we visited.
Follow their advice and get a fly screen before you get to the Rock!

Leif and Tony were knowledgeable and fun, the food is good, and of course the rock is fantastic. The only downsides were all the flies that will go under your sunglasses to try to get in your eyes, so make sure you get a fly net! Also it's very hot even in spring, and so many sweaty people on a bus makes the air con not very effective. Many people on the trip were disappointed to hear you couldn't climb the rock because of the heat, so I wish they had conveyed that it's considered disrespectful to climb it because its sacred to the aboriginals that own it. It's definitely a must see if you come to Australia, and I'm very happy I got this tour! Also shout out to Leif for stopping to show us the stars on the way back and managing to chat while driving and avoiding all the kangaroos! We had a couple close calls, but didn't hit any of them.

So what a great experience, like most organised trips that incorporate several sights and stops it was time-restricted but then if you want to spend more time in different places I'd suggest renting a car - but you'll miss out on the humour and wealth of information/stories that our guides Dave and Tony have.
a 5-hour drive to and from the rock is a long time to keep you entertained but Dave did just this with his knowledge and hilarious stories and jokes (moo).
I highly recommend this tour if your time in Alice is short as I saw so much and the sunset bbq really finished the day off with a bang (hats off to the cook).
If ever returning I'd love to do more tours with these guys for sure! Palya!

On the Viator/Trip Advisor ticket the tour operator showed as Alice Wanderer & Grayline but if you go to their website and try to book, it takes you to EmuRun and that was the name on the bus actually used. The advantage of booking on Viator/Trip Advisor was the 24hr cancellation policy. Booking directly with EmuRun is AUD10 cheaper but their cancellation policy isn’t as good. Typically when booking on Viator the tour operator sends an email confirming exact pickup time but we had to call to get our hotel’s pickup time and provide our meal preference. We even tried the “email provider” option from Viator booking but got no response. On the tour day they had 3 drivers as it’s a 1100km drive done in 18hrs and the drivers served as tour guides, so it seems they don’t have much of other support staff.
Below is our tour itinerary on Sep 11 to provide a better idea of what is covered.
Hotel pickups were from 6-6:30, bus was exactly on time (6:09) for us at Hilton Double Tree. Orange juice was provided at boarding. Breakfast was around 8:30 at a gas station stop in Ghan with toast and scrambled eggs as the vegetarian option. Then there was one nice stop for views of Mt Conner and Salt lake, which is probably the main advantage of doing the drive instead of flying. Lunch (veggie wrap) was provided around noon on reaching Yulara and was decent. Next stop was Walpa Gorge walk in Kata Tjuta, followed by 1:30 departure to a photo stop covering the 4 main domes just five minutes away. The cultural center with restrooms with water was 2:20-2:50. A few folks who wanted to climb the rock were dropped off at 3:15 and the rest were taken on a water hole walk from 3:20-3:50, followed by a caves walk from 4:00-4:30 when the rock climbers rejoined the group. Drinks were from 5, with dinner from around 5:30. “Vegetarian sausage” was the option for those who selected no red meat or indicated vegetarian preference. That’s probably ok for converts but not a great choice for authentic vegetarians. Orange juice was the option for those who prefer not to drink. Return started post sunset, and we reached our hotel around 12:15 after a few restroom stops.
The bus had USB charging on the seats but for our seat one was broken and one was misaligned so both were unusable. For those taking pictures with phone that’s the only charging option so you may want to check the USB port is usable before selecting a seat. The earlier your boarding the more the choice of available seats, though the front seats have to be reserved in advance (probably for an extra fee). In terms of views the left side window offered Mt Conner and Uluru views before lunch while right side window offers Kata Tjuta views post lunch. On the way there isn’t much to see, so most pictures would be from the designated stops when you anyway get a chance to step outside. The better view sides flip when the bus reverses route but it’s dark post sunset so you won’t see Mt. Conner again. The bus seats were reclining but few people were using that option (maybe out of politeness, maybe because the recline lever is hidden). There was a toilet on board but only for emergencies. Most restroom stops were sub standard, like what you’d expect in 3rd world countries as opposed to a developed country like Australia. The first (and last) restroom in Ghan was the best out of the lot. All 3 driver guides were ok and tried their best to inject some humor to keep people entertained during the longest day tour we have been on.

Great one day trip to Palm Valley & Hermannsburg. Bluey the driver & guide was a wealth of information on the region & culture. The trip was worth it just for that! Bluey drove over very rugged terrain with skill & ease making for a relatively smooth trip. Hermannsburg is an interesting stopover. The shop had a beautiful choice of indigenous art on display

We would like to do a day trip to the West McDonalds, but a little concerned about the walking component - husband's limit would be 30-40 minute easy walking time. Would he get to see all the highlights?

Also forgot to mention that the air-conditioned bus is extremely comfortable for travelling in as well!
