Newton House is a lovely building, beautifully looked after and definitely worth a visit. Tearoom is great and the surrounding parkland (designed by Capability Brown) is simply stunning. Other historical buildings on the site include the medieval Dinewyr Castle and Llandyfeisant Church. So worthwhile visiting, no matter the season.

Very disappointed visited the xmas fayre for the first time paid £21 for two people which gave us entry to Newton House which I expected to be decorated to a high standard for the Xmas period most rooms were a empty space not a tree or decoration in sight a not very impressive tree in the hall and some garlands on the stairs the stalls in the marques were very nice and did buy quite a few items but felt the trust didn't put much effort in and it was over priced have visited many times but this xmas experience was disappointing

I am somewhat baffled why so many people recommend visiting this house. Nothing remains of the original rich inhabitant other than their stuffy portraits. The information provided about them was not interesting. It just wasn't worth the time or money. The basement servant area was the most interesting and the book room. The rest of it was not.
The meal we had at the building was a disgrace. We threw out the sandwiches. The house was a poor experience. The ground and the castle were much better.

An interesting property. Fascinating History and set in the grounds of Dinefwr Park and Castle. A National Trust property with a £5. parking fee but we got this back when we went into the House. which was already a very reasonable price. Spent the whole day seeing the House, the Castle and walking in the grounds. Had an excellent lunch in the Cafeteria. Would highly recommend.

We had visited Dinefwr Castle before but never Newton House. Having purchased a National Trust membership, we decided to finally visit the house. It happened to be on a day with a severe heatwave, but we still went ahead. The mansion is smaller than some others we have visited, but it is still impressive architecturally. The rooms had a brilliant balance between grandeur and simplicity. Something I found interesting was a sofa that appeared in Downton Abbey, an unexpected but welcome surprise. These lower furnished rooms give a sense of what life was like on the estate when it was lived in. Upstairs were different exhibitions with artefacts from the estate and information about the house, making it possible to appreciate the historic significance of the house and wider estate. The cellar was also furnished and acted as a window into the lives of those working in the house for the family. There are more interesting buildings on the estate to explore but due to the weather we decided to leave those for a return visit. I personally felt that the wander at your own pleasure execution of this house fits well, as it feels more relaxed than some more popular sites. In an ideal world the whole house would be available but there are likely valid reasons for certain rooms being closed off. There is a cafe here, but we did not use it. While it is unable to compare to larger houses with richer history, this is still an important house that is worth visiting, its grounds are beautiful and the house itself provides for an interesting exploration of Welsh history.

We had a wonderful, warm welcome from both the gatekeeper and receptionist. We then enjoyed a lovely bowl of cawl in the cafe. Again....perfect customer service from the cafe staff. We found Newton house to be both informal and friendly despite it's former grandeur. Great second hand bookshop. Highly recommend a visit. Diolch yn fawr.

We have visited Newton House many times over the years using our National Trust family membership. Our daughter took her first steps here, in the rose garden, and four years on she loves coming here, exploring the many rooms and hallways.
However, on our last visit (15th October 2022) red-haired NT Assistant Ronnie (whom, in the past had mostly been friendly and welcoming) made us feel quite unwelcome. Apparently a family membership is required by all adults within that family, which makes no sense - it’s a FAMILY membership, not individual membership. And my daughter - four years old and two feet tall - is somehow responsible for the plaster falling off the ceiling!
I’m sure Ronnie was having a particularly bad day, as we’ve not encountered her so rude and ill tempered before, but I certainly won’t want to visit here again if she’s going to make our visit so miserable. We pay our family membership so that we can visit places as a family. This was the first time we’ve ever been told that a family membership is for one adult only. Quite quite misleading.

An interesting property unusually designed set in a deer park. The history of the family's estate goes back centuries.
You can also walk through woods to a ruined castle which overlooks the Tywi and you can walk along the ramparts and climb up towers.
The whole estate and castle are free to enter -it's just the house entry which you have to pay for and parking near the house.
In the cafe the chocolate brownies were excellent.

Interesting but not a lot to see considering the size of the house. Few rooms open, not much in them. Some interesting paintings but all in all very disappointing given the charge. I know they have just taken it over and restored the building, but need a lot more in it before asking people to visit. Cafe was really terrible. Take a picnic.

I used to visit Newton house a few times a year and it was always so interesting and well decorated with plenty of history. What has happened to it now I don’t know, all of the rooms that made it interesting were changed and now look rather forlorn and sad or they were just straight up closed! There was no information on any of the paintings which used to be given via the handsets - which fair enough COVID - but to not even have a print out on a stand in front of them so you know who you are looking at and why they are there is poor.
The court yard where you used to exit the gift shop (yes there used to be a gift shop, which is no more sadly as they had lovely items in there) is no longer accessible and whilst they have bought the second hand book shop inside and made it into the library there used to be another little shop in the court yard which is no more.
The cafe is a far cry from what it used to be, whilst there wasn’t a huge selection before there is even less now, the flowers on the table were dying and the water was rank and the coffee tasted like it was made from this water.
The only reason I am giving 2 stars is purely for the cows and the deer. There was nothing else that was particularly enjoyable about the house on this visit which is truly a shame, and I don’t think I will bother again for a while if truth be told.
Whilst it isn’t National Trust, (English Heritage I believe?) I do recommend going up to see the ruined castle which is a bit of a walk, it is interesting to see and the kids can have a run about.

They do have a couple of holiday cottages, but I believe these are only let for longer periods ie a week - they're probably booked by now
Thanks for the review Janie564b -- I'll be visiting next week - is there anyway to find a menu for the tea room? What are the prices like? Thanks. Cheers!
