Brilliant place to walk around with a great setting. Some walks nearby to extend your visit, happened upon the toilets and self serve kitchen next to the abbey main entrance which had a good selection and was hosting an art class. So w good information and all free

Wednesday 27th April 2022, our first visit to Talley abbey – much to my shame as I have known of it for very many years. The ruins of this 12th century abbey are located in the most tranquil and picturesque of places. We visited the small, pretty adjacent church and chatted to several locals who were full of information about the history of the area. Had tea & coffee and biscuits in the church hall – all on a self-service honesty box system.
There are two large lakes nearby and several marked woodland walks but we spent most of our time sitting in peace listening to the birdsong – there are not many places where you can do that these days.

Booked 4 nights (Mon - Fri) and had a really good week at one of the 4 cottages. The cottages are beautifully located in the shadow of Talley Abbey and was blissfully quiet.
Well appointed with all the necessary mod cons including good wifi and some nice personal touches around the cottage. A lovely welcome gift of Welsh cakes and an organic Prosecco 👍
It a good base with most places to visit approx an hour away and the hosts left a very useful local guide which we used for beaches, restaurant etc.
Can thoroughly recommend.

We walked around the forestry, routes are well signposted, quite a few fairly steep inclines so a reasonable degree of fitness is required. The views from the top are stunning. Well worth a visit.

My wife and I decided to visit the lake and Abbey as we haven’t been there for some years. Tranquil and stunning well off the beaten track. The small church along side is also worth a walk around,(it was closed when we were there.

Very peaceful, an idyllic setting for the abbey, excellent information boards, well worth making a detour to visit. Walks around to enjoy the tranquilly spot.

We visited on a dull drizzly day but was well worth it we absolutely loved it. It was very peaceful and interesting in a stunning setting. Lovely little church St Michaels by the side of the ruin (not open unfortunately) very interesting graveyard to meander around if you like to look at gravestones like we do. Fabulous little lake at the bottom with swans on it, surrounded by rolling hills, sheep a horse and chickens in the distance. You could sit by the lake on a nice day there is one bench that we could see. We will be returning later in the week when the weather is better with a picnic.
I think children would find this interesting but they would have to be supervised and not allowed to climb on the ruins for their safety.

Skeletal remains of a unique religious settlement
Talley was founded in the 1180s by Rhys ap Gruffydd (‘The Lord Rhys’, native ruler of the south Wales kingdom of Deheubarth) for the monks of the Premonstratensian order. This was the first and only abbey in Wales for the Premonstratensians, monks who were also known as the ‘White Canons’ from the colour of their habit.
The church tower, standing almost to its full height, is the most impressive feature of the ruined abbey, which never enjoyed the wealth and success of the Cistercian religious settlements – quite widespread throughout Wales – that inspired it. Lack of funds meant that the church was never fully completed, though the outline of the footings demonstrates the scale and ambition of its design. The ruins stand in an idyllic setting beside Talley’s twin lakes.
I think children would find this interesting but they would have to be supervised and not allowed to climb on the ruins for their safety.

Very pretty setting looking out over Talley lakes park your car out side the old church beside the abbey or along side the entrance to the forestry,if you like walking take forestry walk it’s really good gravel tracks that go right to the top in a circle and you can look down over the abbey and lake.
