Well worth a visit, very much more interesting than it might sound and not just for a rainy day!
juni 2019
I'll agree with a couple of other reviewers in that I thought that canning museum didn't sound all that exciting, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I was both fascinated and enchanted by this place.

Stepping into the boardroom was like stepping back in time. The technical aspects of the process were very interesting, as was the historical side, which was well expressed and brought the whole thing to life. The enthusiasm of the staff (volunteers? Acted like it if not!) was impressive, and really topped the visit off.

Might not be everyone's thing? I'd have thought it wouldn't be mine, I'd definitely recommend at least having a look and then make your mind up. If my wife hadn't dragged me in I'd have missed an enthralling couple of hours.

Dear RJMLynch Just what we need to encourage us in these Corona days when the museum is closed. Thank you very much for your comments, and indeed still remembered after several months. Sorry to disappoint you, but our staff/guides are paid, but their enthusiasm is genuine! We love the museum - simple as that. Many thanks to your wife too, for "dragging" you in. She wouldn't be the first! Keep well - all the best for the Easter break, Piers Crocker Curator, Norwegian Canning museum

Dear EllisReisen, (Love the Eisbär-sign!) Thank you very much for your very positive review of the Canning Museum. It is now closed for major construction work (a new roof), and we are also working on upgrading and adding to the exhibitions, ready for the new Printing Museum (Gutenberg will be featured!) in the back yard, so it is good to know that the visit was so "unvergesslich" that you took the trouble to send a review some time after you had visited! I will pass on your comments to our gentleman guide - yes, he is passionate and loves his job! Best Regards, Piers Crocker, Curator.

Klein maar zeer authentiek museum met mooi overzicht van de conservenindustrie. Originele films; workshops mogelijk. Jammer van de verbouwingen toen wij er waren ( 1ste verdieping)

Dear JoostVL213, I am assuming you understand English, if not, Google Translate (Vertalen) is happily available! Thank you for reviewing us, more than a month after you visited: it must have been a good memory for you. My apologies that the first floor was closed: in fact the whole Exhibition had been taken down so there was nothing to see. We moved some items down to the ground floor. But now the Whole museum is closed because of major construction work (a new roof and a new Printing Museum in the back yard). So there is a lot of noise and dust! Best Regards, Piers Crocker, Curator.

Coup de foudre
aug. 2019 • Familj

Dear muemar99, I am assuming that you can understand written English as well as you can understand spoken English - or perhaps you thought the guided tour was better than it was in reality! Many many thanks indeed for your encouraging words - we never really know to what extent we communicate in English to those who do not have English as their first language. Spometimes we seem to do quite well! Sad that we will have to close the museum just as we are getting so much positive feedback! Have a wonderful life - maybe part of it will be a return visit to the new museum. Schöne Grüße, Piers Crocker.

Unexpectedly, one of our Stavanger highlights!
juni 2019
Looking at Stavanger old town (Gamle Stavanger) from Brittania as she moored I was curious about a building with a tall chimney and behind it a building with the inscription (as much as I could see) 'Hermetikkmuseum'. Sounds like that is something to do with canning, I thought. So we strolled over and into the very pleasant old town lanes and found it to be the canning museum. We had a look around and then joined the tour being organised by a British gentleman. The tour was excellent and we followed the various processes from receiving the catch to the placing a label on a can. The tour certainly made sense of all the various pieces of machinery in the museum and our guide enthusiastically explained the processes and allowed us 'hands on' with various items. He also provided many anecdotes which brought the whole business, of canning sprats, to life. Well worth a visit because on entry you get a MUST ticket for other museums but take the tour as it brings the whole visit to life.
And incidentally the tall chimney I saw from the ship is the old bakery in front of the museum - now a good coffee shop.

Dear paulm1002016, Did you not see the chimneys of the Canning Museum as well? "Our chimneys are bigger than their chimney"… We are good friends! Our "gentleman guide" always says his enthusiasm for the tours is a Gift. He has reached official retirement age but hopes to continue until the age of 70, if his health holds - and he certainly seems to be in full vigour, despite his sometimes 10-hour days, mostly on his feet. Regrettably the Canning Museum will be closed for a season while a new Printing Museum (without chimneys!) is being built on the block behind it, adding to the number of MUST museums. This will also provide an opportunity for a total makeover for the Canning Museum's Exhibitions, while still retaining its special atmosphere. Thank you for awarding us five stars - and welcome back! Best regards, Piers Crocker, Curator.

“The Smell of Money”
juni 2019
The museum, located in Old Stavanger, tells the story of the fishing trade as the major source of income for residents of this little town during the 18th and 19th centuries. When the industry began to fail in the 1870s, fisherman concentrated on small herring. These were cured and canned and marketed as Norwegian “sardines”. There were little complaints when the smell of the fish hung over the city. To Norwegians, the “smell” was money. Three stars because it was not open when we were there.

Dear ITRT, Sorry that you slipped through the net - in terms of a quick reply to your comments. I am also very sorry that we were not open when you came. I would be interested to know date and time, because we should have been open until at least four o' clock. Maybe someone had told you we were open later. But Many Thanks for giving us three stars even so, and graciously explaining why. Just a fine tweak on your information… The industry that failed in 1870 was exporting salted herring, because the fish stocks disappeared. So we went over to canning Sprats, which were marketed as "Sardines". Later the herring returned, and we canned that too, both small ("Herring Sardines"), large, and as Kippers (i.e. Smoked). Have great life! (Now we are officially closed for massive refurbishments - but come again, and let us know when! - reopening not before October 2020) Best Regards, Piers Crocker, Curator

Unexpectedly Fascinating
juli 2019
This charming and hands-on museum is unexpectedly fascinating. Tins of sardines are something you take for granted but in this authentic building you can see how sophisticated this industry used to be in Stavanger going back to the 19th century. You can try filling the tins manually the way women used to do many years ago - you need to get the fish to fit in their optimal configuration, and all within 6 seconds per tin! Remarkably, many of the old machines still work, very noisily, as you can see on the excellent guided tour. My favourite, although not working, was the decapitating machine. Everything is demonstrated with little rubber sardines otherwise it would be a very smelly experience.
Also fascinating are the sardine labels which were important for marketing the tins around the world. The museum has thousands of these now valuable and highly collectable labels. The building work behind the museum is to create an extension to showcase the labels, opening next year.
To get the most out of this museum, make sure you take a leaflet in your language on the way in, join the guided tour and try to do the tin filling.

Fantastic guide!
juli 2019 • Par
We came her mainly to hide from the rain and kill some time, but were very pleasantly surprised! We’ve learned everything we never new we wanted to know about canning and it also gave us some insight to life in early Stavanger. The main attraction was the guide, a slighty older man, who started his tour for two girls from Finland and ended an hour later with an ever growing group of 20+ people. He spoke with so much passion, knowledge and wit! If You end up here, definitaly join his tour!

Dear Matthijs603, Thank you for your kind comments, and 5 stars - happy to know that hiding from the rain and killing time can lead to such positive results! The guide has on a previous occasion been described as "elderly", so he will no doubt be much encouraged to be upgraded to "slightly older". Thank you on his behalf! Have fun, you never know what you might find in a museum! Best wishes, Piers Crocker, Curator
