It's changed. Great if you like expensive real ale and noisy student's. Characters who made this place a friendly pub with character long gone. Need to find a proper retreat in Moseley that does not need a second mortgage.

Superb Vodka 'Martini', served correctly with Noilly Prat rather than the Italian vermouth.
I've tasted so many duff versions of the drink that I'd almost given up hope of finding it done correctly. Full marks to the chap on duty in the garden yesterday afternoon.
Nothing more to add: just good to find somewhere that can still produce a decent cocktail.

I’m loathe to leave this review as The Prince has been a favourite for years and years, it was even where my husband and I had our first date(!), and especially because it has been a hard year for businesses I want to be understanding but there are some things that just can’t be ignored.
Many pubs and restaurants spent lockdown taking stock and making improvements to their facilities ready to welcome back customers, so I was really heartbroken to find that when we visited in November to sample the new vegan menu, investments has been made in “fancy” developments like the cigar hut and ski lodge, yet the toilets remain unchanged in 10 years… freezing cold, 1 stall door that wouldn’t shut with no working light, the other stall with a broken lock, and a hand dryer that doesn’t work. I’m told the mens wasn’t much better and had the mirror smashed off the wall.
From a safety standpoint alone, women’s toilet stalls that don’t close/lock is a huge huge problem. And establishments that don’t think this important is a massive red flag.
Call me old fashioned but the state of the toilets is a really good steer of how much people care, and there has been zero attempt made to fix these really basic requirements. Especially when you consider they are now cooking and serving food. If I can’t trust you to service your basic facilities properly you can bet I won’t trust you to cook hygienically.
That brings me on to the service. Of which there was none. We had a reservation and got stuck in traffic, website says to call ahead which we attempted several times over 20 mins but the phone repeatedly went to answerphone with no option to even leave a message. I don’t think any attempt is made to actually answer the phone, especially when I arrived to find the bar almost empty! So no excuses there for being too busy.
Given we had a reservation, no one actually greeted us or so much as gestured us to where we should expect to sit (it’s a large pub with lots of rooms so some sort of steer was expected) and the bar staff seemed surprised to be asked. Talking about the bar, the beer selection was meagre compared to how it used to be and the bar itself sopping wet with uncleaned spillages. It felt - I hate to say it - grotty. There really was nothing welcoming about the bar anymore.
We eventually found some seats and assuming we were in the right place, had to ask other diners what was happening as there were no staff around, and it transpired that food was brought out in a revolving door fashion as soon as it was ready. Had to ask for cutlery. And napkins. It might have been a free meal while they trialled their menu but the lack of clarity and service of any kind was really disconcerting. While the guy serving the food was lovely, the food itself was disappointing. By far the best thing on the menu was the plantain chips and guacamole, but almost everything else was deep fried in the same batter with the same dressing and the same salad leaves to the point where I couldn’t actually stomach it any longer. As a vegan menu I found it to be unimaginative and if you don’t like fried food you’re out of luck I’m afraid. I appreciate we were sampling everything on the menu back to back and as a pub-bites menu you might only order 1 or 2 items, but variety was definitely lacking. I wouldn’t call it restaurant food. I’ve been served better from a festival van.
I really wish the owners would stop trying so hard with gimmicks and instead put some love and care into the place. Feels like they’re relying on a younger crowd who’ll put up with shabby facilities, without realising they’re actually insulting everyone by expecting them to be wowed by nice-to-haves whilst ignoring glaringly obvious flaws and health and safety concerns. The Prince of Wales is a Moseley institution and one very close to my heart, but whilst the customer service is so poor and the toilets a health hazard I won’t be returning. Sorry PoW. Please please fix the things that matter.

Really enjoyed the new food menu they're doing "Cantina". As a veggie it's great to be able to eat everything on the menu. The guacamole that came with the plantain chips was potentially the best guac I have EVER had! The breaded sweet peppers were a favourite too. And as always, super friendly staff and a great place to be.

Sampled the new vegan menu this evening- really liked the guacamole with plantain chips and the cauliflower bites. The roast potatoes with spicy tomato sauce were nice too. I wasn't as keen on the onion rings, bit too oily for me but my friend liked them. I really like the new indoor/outdoor wooden hut area, it felt really cosy with the wood burner going on a cold evening

Sampled the new cantina menu and it was lush...the guac was the best I've had in a long time- I shamefully licked the bowl! We shared a selection of bits - the cauli bbq bites were great - a crunchy, breaded crumb, and cooked with enough 'bite' still left; I've never had plantain before but the wedges (served with aforementioned delicious guac) were delightful; Seasoned fries were tasty and the balsamic peppers was also lovely. My second favourite item was the patata bravas- a substantial portion seasoned and served with generous helpings of sour cream and a bbq sauce that was right in the middle of sweet and smoky

And if it was possible, better. Try the breadcrumbed sweet pepper & don’t be put off by the thought of cauliflower (one of my least fav veg) The breadcrumb coated crispness with a spicy salsa on a rocket bed & balsamic tint? Tasty as 👍

Visited on Saturday night and met by a lengthy wait at the door even though we had booked as the doorman was too busy chatting up a customer (later witnessed him putting his number into her phone). Watered down cocktails and even after complaining was just bought the same drink back, no offer of a fresh one, change of drink or refund. Manager too busy dancing with customers to care.
Customers roaming around between tables, standing around and not wearing masks (I can’t imagine that many were exempt!)
After 14 years of visiting The Prince I won’t be going there again. Definitely changed for the worse due to Covid and trying to attract the under 25s even after trying to blanket ban them in 2020 and a news sob story of not making enough money to survive on a rainy Monday…

As a regular at the Prince of Wales Moseley I was absolutely disgusted to be shown the w****r gesture from a bar man whilst sitting at my table minding my business with friends and family.
We were on a hen party so perhaps a bit loud but seated given the current rules and quite far away from this staff member, we hadn’t even spoken to him directly so definitely didn’t warrant that behaviour from a member of staff from across the venue, it was inappropriate, made me feel uncomfortable and I found it quite upsetting. The guy was behind the bar in the garden wearing a man bun.
I have been bringing custom to the prince of wales for years and is one of my favourite pubs in brum but after that sadly I don’t think I would return until I knew he was no longer working there.

Where is the nearest hotel to The Prince of Wales

You're probably best looking at hotels in the city, which is 3 miles away.
Maybe the Paragon in Digbeth is the closest from the top of my head.
Away from the city, then the Travelodge at the Maypole is the nearest. It's a straight road (alcester road) from Moseley to the Maypole, via Kings Heath. And maybe 2/3 miles away.

So you can catch the number 50 from outside moor street station. The journey takes about 15 minutes, and you just get off after the Texaco garage on your right. Otherwise local taxi service are relatively cheap and should know where we are.
