It was a parking place that is problem. If you returned to your car after walking the trail, your car might not be in pristine condition. Ok trail.

Alex N wrote a very nice review so I'm not going to repeat it, hopefully just add to it.
If you are visiting this area of the Everglades mainly by car, you can drive up to the gate that leads to Old Ingraham Highway, park you car there and hike for a while. As a precaution, don't leave anything of value showing inside the car.
I live in Miami and I take advantage of the Everglades to go biking. FYI - My bike is set up for touring with a bit fatter tires than the usual (but not those huge ones). I also can fit up to four panniers.
I take snacks, plenty of water and in my case tools and an extra tire tube.
First of all the best time of year to hike or bike the area is during our "winter". From about October to about April. After that you have to put up with a lot of heat, humidity and if you are still out after I would say 17:30 or 18:00, a TON of mosquitoes.
Take plenty of water, mosquito repellent and sunscreen. A hat helps a lot!
Ok, enough of that.
To bike the old highway I park my car at the Visitor Center and then bike to the highway. I have made it to the Ernest Coe campsite but intend to try and make it to the end one of these days.
Biking will be relatively easy however occasionally you will have to get off the bike and lead it through thick brush and depending on the time of year a lot of water and mud.
But it is all worth it!
No one out there. The occasional small plane flying over. Just nature and the noises nature makes. You will see plenty of birds, alligators (plenty of them depending on the time of year), a snake or two or three and turtles. The vastness of the Everglades seems to be enhanced by the silence once you are out there.
Oh, and you might get lucky and Unfortunately spot a Burmese Python. Yes, that's what I just said. Just stay away from it. It will also stay away from you.

This is part of the original road that went to Flamingo. It is now gated after a few miles. It can still be explored on foot or bike. Because it is less traveled it can be a good area to spot birds and snakes.

This is the road untraveled today but in 1920 when the pioneers of the area, the Flamingo fishing community, moonshiners and gator hunters used this road as the only way to get access to this wild area. The road is really not promoted by the park service and apparently the park wants to return nature to the trail. The 2 campsites have been abandoned. I rode solo and it is a partially paved, limestone base, muddy section trail ride which you can hike but that will take a long walk. I read a lot of the historical record from the Gladesmen book. So this trail goes through hammocks, cypress trees, prairie and with much of the trail abutting the old homestead canal that was the attempt to drain and use of fill to make this road.
The ride seems longer than what the park service states in distance. My tracker marked longer distances by one mile at the junction points but more importantly is that the roads are now less traveled so expect muddy patches, lots of webs, overgrowth of trees and your local gator laying on the trail site sunning or spooking into the water. It can't be any more isolated in the glades due to the remote road. I love this type of ride. Absolutely you and nature. But I would recommend a friend ride along for safety, bike issues and injury that Murphy's Law can throw at you. Take water, snacks and plan to take knife or machete in case you need to hack some branches. Ride time is about 2 hours up and 2 back. Plus tourist time like.pictures and scenic enjoyment. So ride prepared and enjoy.

This is a wonderful way to traverse the Everglades. Take your time and enjoy the scenery on this 38 mile journey. There are several pullouts for trails and viewing. We say an alligator early on in one of the ponds right by the road. I'm sure there is plenty of wildlife around during the early and later periods of the day. It's a good road with lots of room. The speed limit is actually 55mph so you won't be poking around unless you want to.
