Beautiful cultural day between Nizwa fort, jabreen and balha we had a great day. It's a change from hiking in the mountains. We had a great time with explanations in French and audio guide in French in Jabreen Castle which is super well decorated. We loved it

The castle/fort has been beautifully restored.
Many rooms are somewhat furnished/decorated.
An (albeit poorly intelligible) English audio tour is included in the price.
This, together with the information boards and decorations, gives you a good idea of the functions of the different rooms and how and why things were built in a certain way. Many old original ceilings and wood carvings are still present.
Of all the forts/castles, in our opinion this is the most beautiful and fun to visit.
Price in May 2023 for tourists is 3 Rial per person including the audio tour. Staff very helpful and friendly. Sufficient English speaking.
There is a small coffee bar in the castle on the ground floor, immediately after the thick entrance door.
The toilets (western) are outside the fort opposite the entrance. The toilets were neat and clean, provided with toilet paper.

Really enjoyed (self) touring Jibreen Castle. Our toddler did too! (Walking up and down the many staircases, looking at the pillows, looking out the windows...). Some of the rooms were adorned with rugs and brightly colored pillows, an old mirror, furniture, pottery. Well-maintained. A lot of rooms to see (and nice views from the various rooftops/lookouts). Friendly man running the coffee stand (who gave our toddler a few biscuits for free).
Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

There are many historical forts and castles in Oman. This one was my favorite. The architecture of these castles capture the historical culture of the time. The castle is designed in a way to protect from the outside. Every single place, including the mosque, is armed and ready to be defended, and every aspect of life can be protected inside the castle. Even the stables are inside. The architecture reveals a very protective culture that was constantly at war with the outside. The castle also reveals the absolute power of the imam who was simultaneously the religious and political leader and therefore all aspects of social life including the judiciary are enclosed within the stone walls of the castle. This warlike and harsh lifestyle seems to be in very harsh contrast with the modern life of Omanis who seem to be very tranquil, peaceful, and welcoming people.
Overall it's very rare for one place to include this much information and culture in one place. Definitely recommended.

An interesting site that was surprisingly busy on a Friday morning. Despite the crowd of students having fun, the staff were particularly gracious and eager to help. We enjoyed the well-renovated rooms on the main level. However, I was unable to visit the upper floors due to the particularly steep staircase (not compatible with bad knees). Fortunately, my personal photographer - aka my hubby - went up to take photos. The painted wooden ceilings are particularly beautiful and furnished rooms help to define the function and scale of the spaces. As this site attracts more visitors, investing in a lift would be a welcomed addition to increase the accessibility of the upper floors.

Our visit to Jabreen was part of our Private Full Day Nizwa Fort Nizwa Souq Bahla Fort Jabreen Castle. After visiting we decided that calling it a castle was really a misnomer, in the UK it would have been a fortified manor house. The outer wall was quite low and more for show than defence while the interior was beautifully decorated and a palace type residence.
The ceilings in some of the rooms were beautifully painted and others had ornate plasterwork or stone inscriptions. Some rooms were furnished with carpets, travelling chests and books and there was also a small armoury to visit. The exhibition in one of the rooms told about the castle's founder, Imam Bil'arab-bin Sultan al-Yarubi in the seventeenth century. He is actually buried in the castle and he helped expand Oman as far as the coast of Mozambique, building the countries wealth through trading in slaves. He defeated the Portugese and even raided as far as India as well as expanding trade and education.
The rooms in Jabreen Castle were brighter than either of the previous forts, with tall windows in most rooms and the place had a lovely feel to it, despite being another warren. Interestingly, none of the places we visited today had a hamman, just bathrooms for sluicing yourself clean with water. My favourite feature and perhaps the one that made it most homey, was the open central courtyard. This was a beautiful and tranquil area in the middle of the fort that was immersed in shade but still plenty bright enough, just without some of the heat.

Of all the forts and castles visited, Jabrin is, in my opinion, the most beautiful. It is neither a fortress, nor a castle, nor a house, but all of these things together. It was transformed over the centuries by the will of the sultan who wanted it built and who also has a tomb here. AND? articulated but tidy, dark and bright, it has beautiful frescoed ceilings and a wonderful open-air courtyard within the walls. A jewel.

The fort is beautiful. It is necessary to reach the last floor and the roof of the fort

I had visited Nizwa Fort already and wondered if I needed to see another. I am glad I did as I liked Jabreen Castle more than Nizwa Fort. It just made more sense and had other architectural embellishments that made it interesting like the ceilings etc. A lot of history here and beautifully presented. Lovely framed views out the castle windows to palm plantations. Again we were only of a handful of people visiting which made it easy and enjoyable. Would definitely recommend.

A wonderful castle located on the outskirts of the city. Free outdoor parking. Restored and with many explanations on panels and video screens. Possibility of hearing aids. Magnificent sunsets. Much less crowded (and cheaper) than the Nizwa fort.

We are going to Oman in October 2018. Arriving on 15 October 8 am and leaving 20 October at 9am for Dubai. We would like to concentrate more on nature than culture but we would like to do some of the best cultural experiences like the Mosque etc. Is it best to do it on your own or with a tour guide? Can you please recommend a tour plan and accommodation accordingly?
Skrivet 5 juli 2018
Hi Hans,
its much cheaper and you are much more flexible to do it on your own with rent a car. We did two weeks travelling with a small child and it was great. The organised tours are way too expensive and not necessary. Oman is really safe and the motorways are new and nice. Google maps works well. In fact you don´t even need 4 x 4 vehicle. The only two times we needed it was - in the desert and high in the mountains Jebel Sham. Everything else is easily accessible by normal car.

Buongiorno: io ho viaggiato in Oman nel gennaio del 2015 e le temperature erano molto gradevoli. Penso che in novembre le temperature dovrebbero essere leggermente superiori, ma comunque primaverili. Saluti Aldo

Does anyone have the exact Lat/Long coordinates for the castle, or even the Garmin satnav coordinates please ?
