Great fun, a nice way to explore away from the tourist trail

I rented a Trabbie for a sunny Sunday afternoon. The booking process was quick but didn't give instant confirmation. As others have said, their workshops are at the very back of an industrial yard, which is not straightforward to find.

However, the collection and drop off was straightforward. Remember to have 100 Euro cash as a deposit.

Trabants have a different design philosophy to modern cars, so be ready to learn quick! Once I got the hang of it, this was a very easy car to drive.

Basically, you only use gears 1/2/3 to accelerate from a stop, and you change up through them VERY quickly (it's got about 10% of the power of a modern car, so it needs help from a stop). If you aren't accelerating from a stop, then you need to be in neutral or 4th. Once moving, just stick to 4th and the car is really easy to drive. Because of the unusual way the gearbox works, you could be driving very slowly or very quickly and almost always be in 4th; it's not like a modern car where you change gears down, and a Trabbie won't stall unless you are about to stop. That's how they are designed to work. Once you've got the hang of this different philosophy, it's arguably easier than a modern stick shift.

Traffic in Berlin tends to get stuck at traffic lights. So, if you don't want to spend your entire time in a traffic jam at a junction, head out east to somewhere like the cute town of Köpenick, or maybe the lake at Woltersdorf. These are places you wouldn't otherwise see and show a different side to life behind the wall.

Great way to see Berlin!

Had a really great time driving the Trabant around Berlin. We arranged to have the car delivered to our hotel, and they were on time and well organized with the paperwork. After explaining to us how to drive the car, we went off on our own for two hours, driving all around the city. The car was a hit, and lots of people snapped photos of the car as we went past. A really unique and fun way to get introduced to Berlin!

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to the wonderful Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate when we noticed a fleet of Trabant cars obviously doing a tour of the city and what a cool surprise.
The cars looked cool in a vintage nostalgic sort of way,if there's one car that sums up Berlin to me it's the Trabant .
Most everyone who saw this fleet of Trabant's stopped and stared and most everyone did what I instinctively did which was to take a few photos of these cool,kooky car,added to the joy of visiting the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate.

Trabant tour is fantastic & great value for money

We booked a private Trabant tour with a guide. Our guide, Eric, collected us in a beige Trabant at the confirmed time slot - we came out of our hotel and he was waiting for us. He then showed us the car and drove us on a fantastic 2 hour tour of the city. We were only in Berlin for 48 hours so thanks to this tour, we saw and learned way more than we could or would have done ourselves. We saw all the major sites, stopped off at Checkpoint Charlie and all within the two hour allotted tour time slot. Eric also asked where we would like to be dropped off at the end, which was great, as he was able to take us to an area we had spotted en route on the tour, near our hotel, from where we could then have a look around before walking back to our hotel. Eric had excellent English and was an extremely knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. The Trabant was a surprisingly comfortable and speedy ride too! Was nice to not have the hassle of learning to drive it and for Eric to drive and guide us around :) Highly recommended!!

Great fun. We took 3 cars for 2 hours and it was the highlight of our weekend in Berlin. Great value and friendly service.

Sehr zu empfehlen! Nach einer ausführlichen Einweisung durch den sehr freundlichen und unkomplizierten Mike in das Fahrzeug, konnten mein Kumpel und ich ohne grosse Formalitäten vom Hof fahren. Wir hatten den Trabi für 2 Stunden gemietet, inkl. 40 Kilometer und sind damit etwas raus aus der Stadt gefahren. War ein Super-, wenn auch hartes Feeling! Das Fahrzeug war technisch okay und alles hat funktioniert. Obwohl wir zum Schluss zeitlich und kilometermässig leicht überzogen haben, mussten wir keine Mehrkosten drauflegen. Einfach nur cool, dieses Unternehmen und ein grosses Lob auf seinen tollen Mitarbeiter Mike. Kann das alles nur weiterempfehlen, macht echt Spass! Lieber Gruss (heute wieder) aus der Schweiz - Patrick & Marco

Unflexible billing. Be on time or face very hefty extra charge

I rented out 2 Trabants for 4 hours self driving. I brought them back 1 hour late. I immediately offered to pay for the extra hour but I got told that rentals are 2, 4 or 8 hours so I got asked to pay the full day for both cars... so 1 hour delay cost me 100€ extra (paid 218€ for 2 cars for 4 hours). Clearly I was late but it is a bit extreme and a hefty surcharge. The place to collect the car is remote, run down and far from a nice rental agency like an airport. The cars are not working very well (bearing in mind the Trabant are of course super basic cars) - difficulty to ignite, doors not closing properly, truck cannot be locked, etc.. hence why applying such lack of flexibility? To conclude, 318€ for 5 hours for 2 cars in these conditions sounds totally exagerated.

Adventures round Berlin in a trabant

The was an experience in more ways than one. Drivers need to have experience of driving older vechieles bearing in mind the cars are 40years old plus. The maintenance programme appears to not be the top priority.
That said travelling as a convoy round Berlin at lunchtime not helped by the police closing part of the route. One vehicle suffering misfiring on one cylinder on its two cylinder engine, another vehicle lacking fourth gear and the third vehicle having a clutch that was either on or off. From a convoy of four. Having said that a very interesting and fun as a one off experience.

Best way to see Berlin... And LOTS of fun while doing it.

This is a must-do if you take the chance on driving these terrible, but fun cars.
The guide drives in front of you in a haul of 5 cars and gives the history of Berlin seen by car, on the radio in the car. Very informative and done with humour.
The trip takes you around to loads of photo-opportunities and there are no stress at any time, even if your car sometimes stops due to the crazy gear-shift system of the car.
Two to three people in the car is maximum, I would recommend.

Great time touring around Berlin

Two of my friends and I did the 2-hour guided tour in a Friday afternoon picking up from the apartment we stayed in. We had the luck of having Nikolaus as our guide. He had studied history and knew all about the various sites and the important things that had happened after WW2 with the wall and East German state. Since my friends knew a bit about it, he adapted and did more deep dive / off the beaten path things. My favorite part was seeing the old Templehof airport where the Berlin air drop took place. Nikolaus was very friendly and flexible, especially since we were 10 minutes late due to an issue with our travel. Highly recommended!
