I was excited about visiting a salmon hatchery on our Alaskan cruise. I thought it would be interesting to be there while the salmon were spawning. We learned that the salmon that were hatched here do swim back against the stream to return to this hatchery. Salmon begin to deteriorate as soon as they enter fresh water. Even before they spawn, many will be unfit to eat. Once they arrive back at the hatchery, they return in such large numbers that they slam themselves against the gate to get in. They are very desperate to get back in the gate, and I must say that it was pretty disturbing to see. Because there were so many, the hatchery closes the gates so they can’t naturally return to where they want to be. When they finally are let in, there is no where for them to go so they are whacked in the head with a bat and killed instantly. We were pretty alarmed to see that . We understand that the hatchery is doing what they can to assist the salmon industry in Alaska, but it was shocking to watch them smack the salmon in the head to kill them. Not sure I’d be comfortable watching this again.

Very interesting visit, the fish were climbing the fish ladders by the many thousands! We learned about the whole cycle of a salmons lifespan from eggs to ultimate end of life. It was fascinating and our guide was great. Highly recommend a visit when the fish are running.

This was a stop on a tour off our cruise ship. It was a nice aquatic center that had tables full of sea creatures to touch. Out back we were told about the salmon and it’s lifecycle.

This is a place to kill some time, but it is not a science center. It is a small aquarium and a small hatchery. We went after salmon season, so the hatchery was not very interesting, but if you went when the salmon were there, there would probably be more to see. The staff was friendly and the cost was low, so if you are on a budget and have some kids, this is not a bad stop. They have some nice touch tanks.

Bem interessante.

So many cool sea creatures and you even get to interact with some! The kids loved it!! They even had a scavenger hunt for the kids! We went in the hatchery tour that the adults found interesting, but with the rain we couldn't keep the kids attention and had to leave early. It was such a cool place.

This is a small aquarium museum filled with interesting regional sea life that you can observe up close and even touch. The $6 entrance fee is worth the cost, especially to help fund ongoing educational and research projects. We timed our visit on a Saturday to be able to enjoy Ludwig’s Chowder Cart but alas it wasn’t open.

The nondescript home to this hands-on aquarium and oldest operating salmon hatchery is directly across the street from and part of the Sheldon Jackson Campus. SSSC’s 90-minute “Behind the Scenes” tour ($25/adult, $20 for12 and under) includes all day admission to the Aquarium (otherwise, $8/adult and $6 for 12 and under) and takes one through the research center and hatchery, which plays an important role in keeping the wild salmon population stable by rearing and releasing 3 million Pink salmon, 3 million Chum salmon, and 250,000 Coho salmon per year

My review is based on watching hundreds of salmon throw themselves against the bars at the top of the salmon ladder as they try in vain to return to their spawning grounds. What a horrific way to treat one of Alaska’s most important species. Tourists to Sitka should avoid the walking path with a clear view of this atrocity.
