I have never had anything like this happen to me before. The cashier at Pasta Guy overcharged me for my pasta, when I inquired if that really was the price, she responded “Fine, I will do it for $10 instead of $20.” She then proceeded to put the money in the tip jar instead of the register. She was trying to not only steal money from me, but also the company she works for. I was in disbelief and still at disappointed.

Please see the amount of pasta she tried to charge me $20 for.

Jean Louis’ little store is a treasure that is big on love and flavour. It will make you want to never buy pasta from anywhere else. If you are new to the area have him show you some of his favorite things when you step inside. You will not be disappointed.
It’s also a great place to stop for a morning coffee and croissant to/from the Salem ferry. I adore this human and am so thankful he is in Salem. Jean Louis is part of the critical and unique fabric that make Salem so wonderful. It’s a must on everyone’s list!

I stumbled across this quaint authentic homemade pasta shop while strolling the far northern end of Derby Street. The extensive collection of pastas with various fillings, all made in the store by Jean-Louis, the owner/chef, was impressive. The conversation with the friendly and interesting Jean-Louis lead to the discovery that he hosts private ravioli tastings for 4 -15 people with a two week prior reservation at a very reasonable rate. This past Saturday, six of my friends joined me for a transformative culinary experience. We arrived at 6:30 with our own wine and folding chairs. There was a rustic farm table in the center of the store with another side table for wine. Jean Louis brought out several appetizers, including fresh homemade bread, a pasta-sushi, grilled vegetable pastry and lobster salad made with fresh lobster he had caught that morning. All of it was delicious and only an indication of the culinary expertise of our host and the ravioli that were to follow. The first ravioli was served cold with a gorgonzola, walnut filling and a strawberry cointreau sauce. The second was a warm black bean, cilantro, jack cheese ravioli with a white sauce. Next came a spicy sausage and cheese ravioli with a more traditional red sauce. The final ravioli was my favorite: crab and marscapone with a delicate sauce. The meal ended with a double pastry filled with peaches and strawberries. All of the food was homemade, creative, beautiful, and delicious. Jean-Louis's passion is obvious. His skills are impressive. His conversation stimulating. It was a perfectly enchanting evening that I would highly recommend to anyone who truly appreciates fine food in an intimate and casual atmosphere. I am already planning my next tasting! Merci Jean-Louis!

This is the type (and quality) of artisanal food shop that one expects to find only in much larger and more exclusive neighborhoods. The pasta is made on-site and there's always a wide variety of unusual, delicious, and magazine-cover-decorative raviolis available. Given the expectation that a store like this would sell mainly fresh pasta, I initially felt a bit let down that everything is sold either dried or frozen. But the choice is conscious, and I can't say the end results suffer. The owner, Jean-Louis, has been talking about retiring. Here's hoping he either changes his mind or finds a worthy successor.

We visited "The Pasta Guy" on our very first stop of our Salem Food Tour. What a delight! We were served butternut squash ravioli with a sage butter sauce. I was formerly a fan of the run of the mill ravioli filling (meat, cheese, mushroom, lobster) but Jean Louis introduced us to so much more! Not only were the ravioli delectable, our Salem Food Tour guide Karen Scalia provided us with Jean Louis' sage butter sauce recipe. Jean Louis is in the shop, making pasta within view while you shop. His pasta is a work of art and he has many, many different varieties of ravioli and other pasta to choose from. Some of the ravioli filings included: black bean/monterray jack cheese, goat cheese/mushroom, and of course lobster, cheese, squash and several other unique blends. We bought pasta that day and Jean Louis held our packages for us until the next day so we wouldn't have to carry them around on the tour. He invited us to come back Sunday morning as he has samples set out for shoppers to try. When we arrived, he interrupted his pasta making to tell us about the food and make suggestions on what pairs well with what. Great experience!
