The arboretum is a great place to walk along the trails-kids and dogs welcome. We especially enjoyed the herb garden and the dogwood lane in bloom.

First and foremost (especially after reading a few reviews) everyone needs to understand what this place is. This is not a place of beautifully maintained gardens and landscapes that were planted for public pleasure. This state arboretum is the University of Virginia's Blandy Experimental Farm. This farm was created, built and maintained by the university's directors, professors and students, it's an outdoor laboratory and experimental farm. The university however, leaves their space open to the public (which is why there is no cost to enter). The acres here are mostly left natural as intended by nature. Many scientific studies and research is done here with trees from all over the world, flowers are planted for studies on pollination and one of the most impressive experimental studies was on the ginkgo trees (which is how the ginko Grove was born).

The experiment dates back to the 1930's and 40's. Dr. Orlando White wanted to know what proportion of a ginkgo's seed will develop into male vs. female trees. Dr. White and his students planted seeds collected from a tree on the grounds of the university in Charlottesville. Because ginkgoes can take 20 years or more to reach full maturity, Dr. White did not live long enough to see the outcome and discover the answer to his question. When the final tally was made in 1980's, 157 trees were female and 144 were male - a roughly 1:1 ratio. Today the Ginkgo Grove is the main attraction especially in October when the leaves reach their peak, the most beautiful yellow gold.

The entire Blandy farm is 712 acres with the arboretum occupying 172 acres in the center containing more than 5,000 trees and shrubs from all over the world. There are many trails to walk, a lovely picnic area with tables and trash cans, horseback riding trails and you can bicycle around Loop Drive that circles around the property. It's a wonderful place to spend a quiet afternoon among nature.

Helpful tips & information:

*The grounds are open to the public free of charge, everyday from dawn to dusk.

*Night hiking or overnight camping is not permitted.

*Guided tours for groups of 10 or more are available by appointment.

*Do not climb on trees or the stone walls.

*Do not pick flowers or collect any plant materials including seeds, leaves, pine cones or acorns.

*Do not disturb wildlife.

*Pets are welcome but they have to be on a leash.

*Picnics are allowed in designated area.

*Restrooms are available.

*No hunting, no fishing and no grills or open fires.

*Horses are welcome on the designated Bridle Trail. A fenced paddock is available for loading and unloading. Signed liability waivers are required of all riders and are available in the paddock.

The travel center told us the Gingko trees were close to peak so we decided to go Sunday morning. It wasn't crowded at all around 9 am. It was a beautiful fall day. The gingko trees were gorgeous. There is about a ½ mile walk along a gravel road from the parking lot. There are a few handicap spaces right next to the grove. It was a pretty walk thru rows of trees. Bathrooms are back near the parking area.
After we had admired the grove we wandered thru the rest of the Arboretum. It was quiet and beautiful. Most of the trees are labeled so you can know what they are. There are meadows and pollinator gardens. In the spring there is a dogwood walk.
Definitely a hidden gem and I look forwards to returning in spring or early summer to see what is blooming.

It is garbage. Very pour signage. Very unkept. No marked paths. A very big disappointment. Run a lawn mower, pick some weeds. No welcome center and no clear vision. I could take a walk thru the woods any where, why go to this dump?

Pretty grounds with lots of common and exotic flora. Great to wander around with lots of shade. Interesting and meandering stone walls. Plenty of parking. Area could use better signage (we were lost for a while)

We enjoyed the herb garden, the dogwood trail, and the pollinator garden.
The paths are a combination of large gravel, paved road, grass and
a mix. It is uneven if you have trouble walking or are in a wheelchair.
The Pavillion is open for two bathrooms. For me, I expected more.
I think this needs some serious tender loving care...the gardens just have
so much potential. Lots of people walking dogs...I'm sure the horse
trails are the best. Open from dawn to dusk and free of charge.
We saw school buses and lots of students on the grounds.
It is peaceful and calm. This is a farm...lots of space and
trails.

Beautiful grounds with nice driving loop and walking path. Ample areas to picnic and enjoy the view. We enjoyed the walking path through the experimental marsh, I have never seen so many different species of birds. Lots of great information plaques scattered throughout the property.

On the day that we visited, a few professional photographers were taking pictures of families. There are many opportunities to capture some beautiful scenery. If you visit during a hot summer’s day, take plenty of water. Pace yourself. Sit on the benches, and enjoy the sights and sounds. Be cognizant of the fact that many bees are in this area. Have a plan if you are allergic. Generally speaking, this is a quiet place that affords the visitor with many opportunities for relaxation. Listen to the birds and insects. Take the time to read the names of the plants on the plaques. Tree tunnels exist here. So, if you’re into tree tunnels, this is an added bonus. The main parking lot is tight. Overflow parking is available in the field that is adjacent to the herb gardens.

First time here. No admission charged. It’s the University of Virginia’s experimental farm near Boyce, Va. Started in the 20’s. Boxwoods, Conifers, and ginkgo groves. Night sky programs and lots of plants, gardens and trails to get lost in. There is also a driving circle to admire the park from your car. Kids will love it. Trees are nicely marked. Picnic areas and restrooms available. Dog friendly.

There was information at a kiosk near the parking lot. HOWEVER, the maps were totally confusing and the name of the walking paths were not the same as the roads they were on. There were hardly any signs so we had a hard time figuring out where we were. There was a lake on the map that we were never able to find and others we saw walking around said that they couldn't find it either. They need to do a much better job for visitors to get around.
