St. John's Church is one of my favorite churches and landmarks in Portsmouth. I've yet to go inside, but one of these days! It's New Hampshire's first brick church, built in 1807.

Episcopalianism has a long history in New Hampshire. In Portsmouth, a church dates back to 1638 near the Strawbery Banke area. The St. John’s congregation was formally organized in 1732.
The St. John’s Episcopal Church we see today was built in the area affected by two of the three Christmastime fires in Portsmouth in 1802 and 1806. The wooden St. John's structure burned down in 1806. After the fires, brick became the standard building material for exteriors.
Today's St. John’s was built in 1807. It was the first brick church in the State of New Hampshire.
During my many passing visits driving along Chapel Street, I'd noted that the architecture is primarily the Federal style with three doors and Palladian windows. The three doors on the front of the church are similar to those on the Old Town Hall in Salem, MA which is another Federal style building dating from a little later in 1816.
The church has a tower and belfry and no tall steeple – probably a good idea as it is on a hill and quite close to the Piscataqua River. These two factors put the church in harm’s way for being struck from lightning.
On my most-recent pass by the church, I noticed that the design is not strictly the Federal style which tends to be rather plain. The stone insets, presumably of white marble, of different sizes around the doors and windows are distinguishing elements that set St. John’s design apart the standard characteristics of the Federal style. These features, along with the dentil trim under the brick roofline and wood roof, are also unusual. They are associated more with the Georgian style. And, those things are what caught my eye this time.
Another distinguishing style feature is the bracketed roof. The two brackets on the roof are a touch of the Italianate style. That detail came out when I parked the car and walked to the church for a closer look.
Somehow, this blending of architectural styles created a rather interesting-looking and attractive façade.
St. John’s Episcopal Church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
For its historic value and multi-style architecture, I rate St. John’s Episcopal Church at 5.0 and highly recommend a visit to admire its appearance.

We lived in Exeter, NH up until 2018. My "Nostalgia Tour" couldn't be complete without a visit to St. Johns. Returning to a "much-loved" place after 18 months, we found the experience like coming home. The Rector, Rev Rob Stevens; Rev Anne Williamson; and Rev Nathan Bourne are simply the best combination of caring Clergy! The church is historic and the congregation is proud of that! We felt embraced and invigorated after our visit. Whether Episcopalian or not, EVERYONE is welcomed at St. Johns!

The interior is clean a nd simple, like one would expedt in a New England chruch. It has been the house of worship for a number of founding fathers.

This is a historic church rebuilt after one of many Portsmouth fires. It is as beautiful as any other church in the area. It has very active outreach programs. They vary from children activities to Common Table free lunch to all on Thursdays.

There are many historic churches that my wife and I have visited during our travels. Among our favorites are the Lee Chapel in Lexington, Virginia, St. Paul's and St. John's in Richmond, Virginia, St. Michael's in Charleston, South Carolina, Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, and Blandford Church in Petersburg, Virginia. A most recent addition to the list is St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. If no services are being conducted, slip inside to see the many historic artifacts that are housed within, such as a Vinegar Bible, an original Book of Common Prayer, pipe organs and stained glass windows. Also be aware that George Washington and Daniel Webster once worshipped here. Located at 101 Chapel Street, St. John's (then called Queen's Chapel) was the firsts church erected in Strawbery Banke (now Portsmouth) in 1638. The original parish was destroyed by fire in 1806. But the cornerstone of the present structure was laid in 1807. In 1953, a new Parish House was constructed beside the church. Today, St. John's is the oldest Episcopal Parish in New Hampshire. In 1978, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The land adjacent to the north side of the church was used as a burying ground. There are about 100 marked graves, one dating to 1745. Two notable burials are Royal Governor Benning Wentworth (1766) and the Rev. Arthur Browne (1773), the first Rector of Queen's Chapel.

I've only seen it from the outside but this is a beautiful, classic New England church sitting high on a hill overlooking the pretty streets of busy downtown Portsmouth.

We started coming here as visitors then joined the Church. We were always felt welcomed and not left out. I now go early to Church so I can listen to the choir rehearse. They are truly gifted.
