“Quick getaway from the city”
maj 2023

“Grant lake is surreal”
dec. 2021

Quick getaway from the city
maj 2023
It was nice and quite, if you just need a quick getaway from the city of San Jose, this place is literally 30 minutes away. Camp host told us hammocks are not allowed to be tied onto the trees and if you have dogs, please watch for ticks. But other than that, our stay was nice.

Grant lake is surreal
dec. 2021
Right across the street from Joseph D. Grant County Park is located very beautiful Grant Lake. It is great location for numerous hiking trails. Maps are available at the stand. It took us about 1 hour to go around the Grant Lake. Be careful if you have dogs, water in the lake is not safe for drinking due to the seasonal red algae. This place has wild bores, occasional snakes and mountain lions. Beautiful cranes and Canadian geese are common visitors. Few benches are available for hikers, to enjoy surreal atmosphere. Grant Lake is just 30 minutes away from San Jose and you can't hear Silicon Valley's heavy traffic here. Stanford has few scientific bases nearby. Not that far away is Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton. Grant County Park have plenty of camping sites. We love to come here to have relaxing time with our family.

Nature in San Jose! Who knew?
maj 2022
Very nice, clean, park only 10 miles for downtown San Jose. You even have views of the city of the way down the hill. The two roads up to the park are not for the faint of heart or car or trucks pulling trailers or large RVs. They are very narrow and twisty roads. Only about 7 miles but will take you 1/2 hour to travel. Well worth the state. Lots of hot water in the showers. Clean bathrooms. Nice hosts and rangers. Great dog friendly trails. I'll stay again.

30 minutes from DTSJ and yet a world away
juni 2021 • Vänner
This is an excellent park to camp and get away from the city and into nature. We camped over a weekend and had a variety of birds visit our campsite, before we even left for the trails! At the campsite, parking was easy, there was plenty of shade, and we had a pretty view of the sunset on the Observatory. With water, flushing toilets, and showers, and it not being too crowded a park (yet?!), I’ll definitely come back. I’d love to come in spring when the hills are green. Even with the brown hills, we still had a great time meeting so many new flora and fauna for the first time!

Fun hike
juli 2020
I visited here with my son for some light hiking during the height of the pandemic. We were VERY careful (masks on, hand washing/sanitizing, social distance) and loved our little hike. We saw a little fishing pond that is for kids only (during non-COVID times) and my son was very excited (as was I!) and hopefully, someday we can try it.

Nice Time at Joseph D. Grant County Park, San Jose, Ca
mars 2020
We enjoyed our time at Joseph d, Grant County Park. This is a large park. It has a nice old ranch area to explore. There is a lake to walk by or go fishing at. There are trails to hike. There is also an equestrian area and trails to ride. There are places for a picnic.
We also were delighted to see a bald eagle.
To go there its on Mt. Hamilton Road.

Make a Day of this Wonderful Park.
dec. 2019
I have been to Grant Park many times, in fact when the stables for the city's hoses were there, i took lessons from the instructor. I have ridden my horse there dozen of times but have also hiked and had picnics there. They even have overnight camping although I have not done that. What is really nice is to do your activity (hike, ride, picnic) and then make sure you are there when the sun goes down. The view is killer as you can see all across the valley and the bay. I will say when you go home, be sure and go towards Alum Rock Road so that you will be on the inside of the road, meaning you will be next to the hillside. There are some very steep drop offs. Of course during the summer, you can stay until 9:00 pm and it will still be light but springtime is also lovely with wildflowers and more. The last time I rode there, there were lots of baby boars. They looked like little round basketballs with short stubby legs. So take some time to visit. It is quite a trek f you are coming from out of the area. I always take Quimby up to the park but it is not good for RVs or very large SUVs. To me, it is like going back a hundred years in time and being able to see San Jose when it was just a farming community. It is a very beautiful place.

Wildflower time is now in March/April!!
apr. 2018 • Familj
It is a relatively long slow drive up to the park from the SF Bay area, but it is well worth it. Just be sure to pack sufficient water/hydration. If you are there for 8 hours, you will need at least 1 gallon per person.
The wildflowers there are spectacular with easily over 100 varieties. In fact, you can access the website and download a guide. Print it out in color (maybe 10 pages) then take it along to identify all. Really a treat. The fire roads and single track trails are well marked and generally in great shape. Well worth a day of explpration. Enjoy

Is there an entrance fee or parking fee?

there is an entrance fee to enter the main parking lot by the bathrooms and rose garden. But there is ample parking and entrances to hiking trails all along the outside boundaries of the park.

I was told there is a less steep direction to travel to this park, this is important to me as I will be driving a truck with a very heavy load. Does anyone know what direction this is?

Hi there, Looks like your question has been out there for a while without being answered... Hope you were able to get to the park safely but this also hopefully helps my response others traveling to this wonderful park in the future... You can travel to the park by taking Highway 101 or Highway 680 to Alum Rock Avenue eastbound in San Jose. Turn right onto Mt. Hamilton Road and travel eight miles to reach the park entrance. Quimby Road is the alternate road to the park but is very windy and steep in spots and NOT recommended especially for trailers, and big rigs are prohibited.
