small museum, very rich, really interesting, but...neglected, in need of care, refurbishment from the tumbledown ticket office to the disgusting WC. The fee is high : 1000 ksh for non residents, the guide doesn’t speak English, it is like a pearl in the dump, crushed by the looming highway and the immigration office, surrounded by chaos, almost invisible, hard to find, so very few visitors are…. What a pity

Lovely little museum in the heart of downtown Nairobi. We visited to see the temporary exhibit on Kenya's first political martyr, Pio Gama Pinto. We stayed to tour the rest of the museum with its impressive although small collection of art and artisanry from Kenya and Africa, formerly the collection of Joseph Murumbi.

Parking is plentiful but unfortunately the little cafe has moved.

Housed in a former (Colonial) government office/ private home this personal collection of a Kenyan official (pictured with Ladybird Johnson in a photo) packs a wallop. Practically across the street from the Nairobi Serena Hotel.

This museum was a five minute walk from our hotel, in the vicinity of the government buildings. We had a bit of free time and took advantage of it. We had a very knowledgeable guide who spent nearly two hours discussing all the art and artifacts in the museum, answering any questions we had (and we had many). Definitely should be on your list of things to do in Nairobi.

In the city centre of Nairobi, at the junction of Uhuru and Kenyatta Avenues, in a small, old colonial building, one can find a beautiful collection of artefacts, The Murumbi African Heritage Collections, presented by Nairobi Gallery.
Joseph Murumbi was Kenya's second Vice President. After his early resignation, he and his wife Sheila, went on to increase their vast collection of books and wonderful pieces of art. I am a collector of ethnic artfacts myself and it was, therefore, such a joy for me to walk around and see all the exhibited pieces.
One collector can totally understand the passion that leads another collector. It is a fire that cannot be extinguished. I write all this because I have often been accused of collecting things I don't need. And yet if there were no collectors in the world, we would not have the opportunity to see and enjoy, so many items of interest and beauty, under one roof. I am very grateful to the late Mr and Mrs Murumbi for their Collections which they have made available to us firstly by saving them and then by entrusting them to the Government of Kenya.
The gallery is small, but, a real pleasure to visit. It is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm every day and, yes, there is an entrance fee depending on whether one is a Kenya Resident, an East African Resident or a Non Resident.
Once one has had a look at the gallery, there is a pretty little cafe in the back, by the exit.
