This is a great hike and the views are specular. It is moderate challenge but we loved it. We were therein early October and the daytime temperatures were mild 50 - 70 and the night time temps were 30 to 40.the fall colors were pretty and the crowds have thinned.

Day 1 Started at Tonahutu Creek Trailhead and hiked to the Timberline campsite. Trail
was pretty mild till Upper Granite Falls then the last 4.5-5 miles were up hill the whole way. Day 2 right out of camp we had an almost 2000 ft climb to the top of Flattop Mountain. Brutal if you are not in great shape. Where we saw a huge bull moose on the trail and a giant elk with a big rack. Flattop mountain ⛰ was pretty awesome and had a few must see views. The second half of the day was nothing but knee pounding decent down the first set of switchbacks rocky as all get out.... to our second campsite July campsite #3 was pretty awesome had about 8-10 doe eating grass all around us as we setup our tent and cooked dinner. Rained on us that night to early morning. Day 3 we woke up and waited out the rain till 7am when it stopped and a very thick fog moved in. Hiking down the second set of switchbacks was not bad mostly dirt and small peddles. Now here is where I tell you.. Do not believe anyone who tells you “It’s all down hill from here. A lot of ups and downs. It is a nice trail as you are walking along a river all day. Lots of great pictures if you take the time to look. Around Cascade Falls the trail is not very well marked but it does go right by the Falls. There is a horse only trail that goes up right there. So just stay to the Falls and you’ll be ok. Rest of the trail was pretty standard with ups and downs and really didn’t flatten out till the last mile or so as it pasted through private property.
All and all I really liked this trail. I would recommend it to anyone as long as you prepare yourself beforehand. Glad I did this trail. Awesome

This is my second time summiting Flattop. I also continued to Hallett peak. I am from the flat lands but I do hike avidly and workout every day. I am familiar with the typical afternoon storm and know to start your hikes early. I started at the trail at 4am. Equipped with my pack full of snacks, 3+ liters of water, emergency shelter, rain gear, med kit, and lights. All of the essentials that are necessary to hike. The stars were beautiful. I had my head lamp on until the sun rose and man what a fantastic thing to see. All reds and oranges over the mountains. I reached the summit of Hallet Peak at 8am. It is a rough hike through boulder fields and to get to the summit you are hiking up boulders. A good portion of the hike is above tree line. It is essential to start early! I was the second one up that day and since i was on my way down while everyone else was coming up I could see how unprepared everyone was. First off if you're starting the hike at 10am you might as well not start at all and try again tomorrow. A lot of people didn't have more than one water bottle of water and by 9am it was hot and the sun above the tree line is relentless. It is also essential to be acclimated before hiking this one (any trail really). It is an 8+ mile round trip hike that goes over 12,000 feet if you get up to Hallett.

We started our hike by arriving at 6;15 AM at Bear Lake. It was already getting busy. If you want to park near the trailhead, you need to be there before 7. The trail is challenging as it starts uphill right away and never stops for 4.4 miles. It is well marked and in summer easy to follow. If there is still snow on the trail you are in for a real challenge. My daughter and I are both runners and we completed the hike up in about 2.25 hours. We passed a lot of people on the way and didn't feel like we were pushing it, but we were told that was a pretty fast ascent. My wife chose to do other things that day as it is rated at "hard" for a reason. You need sturdy boots and layers because it gets windy and cold above the tree line - where you spend about half your hiking time. We decided to skip going on to Hallet's Peak, but that was more due to the threat of storms than anything else. We spent a (cold) hour on top and enjoyed the views and some breakfast. The hike down offered a lot of amazing views we missed when huffing and puffing our way up the trail. Well worth the effort. Be sure to watch the weather, though. We got down by 11 and some folks were just heading up, but, as is typical, the thunder started around 12. You do NOT want to be caught above the tree line once it starts to storm.

Get early start 6-7 am to get park spot at Bear Lake (in summer) and beat any possible midday weather. Be prepared for wind on top-- and thankful if not windy! Enjoy the trail both up and down--flowers, wildlife, views, etc. If nice day, continue up Halletts for truly excellent views all around. Will be about 10 miles RT w Halletts. Watch clouds coming from West (Grand Lake side), mountain storms can develop quickly. Have a great hike and take lots of pictures!

Flattop Mountain is 4.4 mi/7.1 km from the Bear Lake trailhead with an elevation gain of 2849 ft/868 m. At the top, there is an unofficial "trail" to Hallett Peak, which consists of a steep climb on rocks.
We're avid hikers and did this hike on the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend. We started at 9:30am and made it to the peak by 11:30am. After having lunch at the peak, we spent 1 hour climbing up and down Hallett Peak before descending Flattop Mountain. The descent took 2 hours as well. We brought 4L of water for 2 people, which was sufficient. Bring a lot of sunscreen as the sun is very strong above the treeline. Around 2pm, we were applying sunscreen every 15 minutes.
We really enjoyed the hike despite the number of people on the trail; we counted around 100. The trail condition was good, and the views were incredible. We saw Lake Helene, Two Rivers Lake, and Emerald Lake from the trail. Above the treeline, chipmunk, pika, and marmot were hiding everywhere between the rocks. They make this cute "eek" sound when they see humans. Compared to the other mountain hikes that we've done, this hike was moderately difficult and not too steep. The climb to Hallett Peak, however, is very steep but also worth the effort.

This hike is awesome. Maybe saw 25 hikers on this trail. It is a great leg and lung workout. The trail is nice, however, it has rock and boulders as part of it. We actually went on a Monday so to avoid the weekend rush. However, we hit the tourist instead (we hiked on 9/18/17). Unfortunately, we could not park at the trail head lot, so we had to do the shuttle, which will add time to your trek. We thought for sure we were there early enough, especially on a week day. We had a nice weather day, but when we got above tree line (2 hrs hike for us), it got extremely windy and gusty winds too. We stayed and hiked a bit more but the gusty winds were blowing us around too much. I would recommend doing this trail, especially if your not a beginner and have the right equipment, start early, bring plenty of water and food. Great views all along the trail.
