If you want to truly connect with nature, you must head to the Hecla provincial park in manitoba. A 2 hour drive from Winnipeg through the quaint little town of Gimli and the village of Hecla, this provincial park is one of the best maintained, with several trails through the village, the forest, the marsh and alongside the beach. It does not get any better than this. You must book the cabins early on, as they are all sold out quickly. The cabins are newly constructed with 4-6 person occupancy. It has a kitchen with stove top, fridge and microwave, but we also did a lot of cooking outdoors in the open. The bathrooms are about a 100-150 yards away from the cabins and there is no running water in the kitchen. But there is no dearth of water, hot and cold. So pack your camping gear and get ready to visit Hecla.

The island is such a beautiful place. So many interesting birds and wild life! With lots of heritage and a bounty of flora and fauna the park is a wonderland. There are trails for every level of ability from gentle strolls to vigorous hikes. A fun place to bike in summer and lots of places to picnic. We even saw a beaver dam and an eagle!

If you think you’re ready for ‘tiny home’ living try the 2 person vacation cabins at Hecla Provincial Park. A definite step up from sleeping in a tent but still feel like you’re camping. The cabin was clean and comfortable - enough ventilation to cool off at night. There was a heater but we did not need it as there was a heat wave during our visit. The futon was firm but adequate for sleep. The mini fridge was not the typical hotel style, it was old but quite large with a small crisper and freezer. We were easily able to keep 5 days of supplies fresh. We cooked outside using our own equipment but there was a two element stovetop and a small sink. Water was close by and so were the washrooms. There was no charge for the one available shower stall and plenty of warm water. The park staff did a great job keeping everything clean and stocked with TP. I’ve seen better infrastructure in developing countries and hope some investment in our beautiful parks is on the agenda in the near future. It was a bit of a hike to the beach and I would recommend bringing bicycles to get around. The trails are not well marked but the campground is easy enough to navigate. There were many people booked during this busy time but still could appreciate the stillness and peace of this beautiful place.

Trails were in good shape and well marked for the most part. Maps could be a little more detailed for new visitors

Had a wonderful weekend in Hecla Provincial Park Campground
Our check in was a pleasure. Both campground office ladies were smiling, friendly, knowledgeable with directions and efficient. Thank you both for a warm welcome.
Our Vacation Cabin for 2 was clean and cozy.
It had cupboard space, a mini fridge, a microwave, sink, nearby water source, fire pit, picnic table, broom/dustpan/mop/pail for cleaning, and a short walk to the parking lot & washrooms
We hiked the Moose Trail 9.6km to the West Quarry - what a wonderful place of history
The fish flies were abundant along the shorelines.
However, the beautiful butterflies and honeysuckle were abundant as well.
We visited Helgi Jones Parkway for a higher viewpoint (to help out we picked up litter as well) and history then Sunset Beach to of course, (picked up litter here too) watch the sunset.
Social Distancing was used respectfully in the park office, local general stores, washroom/shower buildings - a round of applause for all in Hecla this weekend.
After check out we visited the Quarry to enjoy the sounds of waves rolling in on the rocks.
A parking lot, washrooms and a rock staircase down to a few picnic spots with fire pits are available here(picked up some littered picnic trash here).
Then we were off to the Grassy Narrows Marsh Trails (parking lot/washroom/picnics available)- mosquitoes chased us away on the Chorus Frog Trail but will go back someday
The Madtom Trail Marsh Viewpoint was beautiful and an easy 0.6 km with no mosquito swarms.

Very secluded resort. Golf course was in great shape and enjoyed playing a round. The back nine is really scenic.

I don’t think so. I would suggest purchasing online at the provincial site. They don’t issue physical passes anymore (unfortunately).
Do you need a park pass to spend a day on hecla island? use the ferry?

How is it to visit/hike around in April? Looking for a good days hiking trip at the end of April and thought of Hecla although I've only been there in the Fall.

Wow, two months later. I really wish I'd seen this earlier. The hiking trails would likely be a bit soggy however walking through the park as a whole would take hours and be quite beautiful.
What is the address of hecla provincial park

For anyone who has used the family cabins...
First time renter there. The governmenr website says there is a sink...but then I've also heard there is no running water in the cabins.
Does this mean you have to bring tour own water? Or just water jugs?
Thanks for any help.

They have jugs in the cabin and water taps very close to cabins. We bring our own drinking water. We also bring and electric kettle.
